Moose hunting: Alberta vs. Newfoundland
« on: January 28, 2014, 01:47:00 PM »
I am planning a moose hunt for 2015 and my initial location choice is Newfoundland due to the number of moose they have and the average price of the hunt.

That being said, I have seen several posts by folks who say Alberta is the place to go if you are hunting moose with a bow. Some Alberta hunts I looked at were comparable in price so now I am undecided.

I am not particular about moose size or sex; if it's got moose hair on it and it's legal then that is good enough for me.

What are your thoughts on this matter? Alberta or Newfoundland for bowhunting moose?

Thanks,

Darren

From the scenery perspective it is NFLD hands down. Don't overlook Manitoba and Ontario-maybe easier access for you?

I have never been to Newfoundland. However, I had exactly the same decision (between those two provinces) to make.  Based upon a conversation with a friend who went to NFLD, I'm going to Alberta this fall. I realize of course my sample size was tiny but I depend more upon the advice/experience of people I know than anything else. The Alberta hunt is about $1,500 more than the NFLD would have been.

Since you're looking for a "if it's brown, it's down" moose, then I would pick NFLD, for certain. Moose density is unbelievable and the early bow season would be a fantastic time to arrow a bull (or cow).  I kept a log of moose sighted on my first trip over and it exceeded 100 moose.  The rut hunt there is great, as well, but although the action is up, the sightings are fewer. Good Hunting!!

Maybe this will help your decision. Non-Residents have to shoot Bulls only.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

Darren, Check out Connie River Outfitters in Newfoundland. I will be hunting with them this fall, Sept 26- Oct 5th. Newfoundland has the highest concentration of eastern moose anywhere. I will be hunting out of an archery only outpost camp where we will be flown in for the 6 day hunt. Hunt offers 1x1 with all meals included. I believe there is an opening if you can swing the hunt this fall. Just let me know if you're interested. Best of luck, Michael

I recently had to make this decision.  Make sure to take the airfare and shipping into account when making your decision.  Call Mark at Bowhunting Safari Consultants. Alberta and Newfoundland are much more affordable than the other provinces.  Alberta has no harmonized tax.

I've  hunted caribou in Newfoundland and elk in Alberta.  Both are beautiful places but if I was choosing between the two for a guided moose hunt I would pick Newfoundland.  I was there back in 2000 and saw plenty of moose.

If you are looking for a trophy bull, I would go to Alberta. Newfoundland is a little light on good horn genetics. On the other hand, Newfy has lots of moose, great people, and your sure to have a good time. Go in the rut. Calling is super exciting. Wear depends, you may just pee yourself looking up at a moose at  10 feet.  lol

I've hunted moose in both provinces. Once in Newfoundland and three times in Alberta. Different types of hunts but all were adventures. Odds are probably better of getting a moose in Newfoundland.

Based on my hunt in Alberta this year I would try NewFoundland before Alberta again. However I'm going to Alaska this fall instead of either.
