Fred Bear's "Old Kentucky Home" Featured on the cover of TAW!
« on: January 28, 2014, 02:50:00 PM »
This is for the Kentucky and Tennessee archers on TG, but also for anyone else who has either hunted the famous Land Between the Lakes or thought about it.  Fred Bear once showed me the antlers and cape of a fallow deer that he took at LBL (Called "KY Woodlands back then)around 1955, the year I was born.  If memory serves Fred was the first archer to take a fallow with bow and arrow there. Fallow hunting is no longer available, however whitetails still provide plenty of adventure.

I have help organize an annual bow camp there each fall for friends and family, beginning in 1978 or so. I shot the Tradarchers World cover during our 2013 camp. For those familar with the area I am crossing "Crooked Creek" in the photo.  This was the view from out tent camp.

We had a employee, recently deceased who was the longest working state employee in KY's history. I believe the number was 54 years!  He told me one time of actually being with Mr. Bear at LBL in those days.

Now that's dedication Roy. By the way, Fred took that deer in the Barne's Hollow area between Silver Trail and Mulberry Flats roads. In the old days we use to hunt fallows and whitetails there when we were lucky enough to draw the bow quota hunt. Most people I know - out of respect, refer to Fred as "Mr. Bear", which is great.  I call him "Fred" only because he insisted that I call him that. He and Mrs Bear were wonderful people.

That was a nice photo Gary, just like all the stuff I've seen from you.

I'm already done reading this issue through cover to cover. I'm thinking I need to start chasing tree rats again and making me some squirrel nuggets based on the recipe in there. One thing I crossed off the bucket list is mountain goats based on Marv's article in there. Yikes.

The jacket is my  www.classicsportsman.com  or  www.classicbowman.com    Timber plaid

Remember  Free Freight until  Jan 31   save an average of $16.00

Prices on EVERYTHING continue to go up  -  so order if you can and save some money-

IN the future I will need to have the package signed for due to Post office leaving at someone's door and it disappearing -   If I fully insure - it cost more-

Speaking of "Tree Rats", I just received confirmation that a photo I shot of my buddy JR Chapell hunting squirrels with his vintage Bear bow and wooden arrows will be on the cover of Traditional Bowhunter Magazine this fall. He's after a fat one in the photo!

Wow, that Rob is quick on the draw, isn't he?  HA. Since he's pointed out the jacket, and it has become my "go-to" hunting jacket,  allow me to also add that the quiver in the photo is by Art Vincent. It's a "Powderhorn" model which I helped Art redesign (Based upon one of his earlier side quivers). The bow is a Tall Tines TD made by my friend Brian Wessel. All of these guys are proud TG sponsors. Unlike the guys you see on the Outdoor Channel, I could kill deer without using their "stuff", but what they make is top quality.

Ahh Gary, I know that area well! I nearly flunked out of Murray State University that first fall because of LBL (and sorority girls)..,

Every time I crossed that spillway at Energy Lake and went into my favorite spot I though of Fred Bear and his hunts there. Beautiful work for the cover!

They do look like wool don't they? Actually, it's a pair I picked up at a Cabelas sometime back, a brushed looking combo of cotten and made made material. Not 100% sure. Rob's been working on a prototype wool pant for a while, however I haven't seen them first hand.
