What a coincidence!
« on: January 31, 2014, 10:57:00 AM »
I just sold an archery item on the big auction site, and when contacting the buyer after shipping the item to him, I found out that he is one of my dad's old hunting partners from the 1970's!

Dad passed away a few years ago, and I didn't get into trad archery until right after his death.  I knew he was an outstanding hunter and recurve shooter, but I wasn't interested much in archery back in my growing-up years, and missed out on a lot of that archery heritage.  He got into the compound stuff in the 70's and 80's, but gave that up and went back to recurves only in the 90's.

Anybody else know Roman Gray, of the Roman Archery Company, in the San Diego, California area?

I remember going into his store, lakeside, Ca. If I remember right. That was about 1976-77 time frame. It was a journey for me as we lived near Rancho Bernardo at the time. I shot with him in the "sandpits" one time with C. R. Learn. Brings back some great memories.

Yes. I knew your Dad.  He arranged hunts on the islands and I got a Carroll from him in the 1972 time frame.
I lost my recurve due to delamination while I was in RVN.  Went to this shop to get a new recurve and he sold me a compound.  I never gave up on recurves, altho I shot compounds for a number of years.  I retired and went longbow-never looked back

I guess it's worth mentioning to those who have no idea why in asking this question, my dad ran a good-sized archery business and was known for taking groups of hunters out to the islands off the southern California coast, to hunt feral pigs, sheep, and goats.

Hey archie, I just talked to Ray Buckland Sr., he was telling me that he use to hunt with your dad back in the early 70's & went to an island on a couple hunting trip also. So I googled his name  your thread poped up. Ray had got a hold of me to get some information on an Astro Bow your dad had ordered for him in 72. Small World.

Skip,

Thanks for the info!  Interestingly enough, Ray sent me an email about a month ago and we communicated a bit back and forth about my father and his shop back in the old days.

Another interesting tidbit... my mother was going through some of dad's things recently and found some correspondence (emails, I think) between him and Jack Howard.  In them, she said Jack mentioned to dad that he get on the Internet and look up some new thing called "Tradgang" and see what it was all about...!

The man could shoot!  I got stationed in Pendleton years later, immediately started looking for him so I could go back to the Islands-told they gunned down all the goats--DAM!
