Ideas on promoting traditional archery?
« on: February 05, 2014, 12:44:00 PM »

The major goal of TradArchers’ World magazine is to promote traditional archery and to show how much fun it can be. During the past five years of publication, TAW has featured articles ranging from building selfbows, laminated bows, hunting knives and primitive arrows to hunting adventures for whitetails, mule deer, pronghorns, moose, elk, bear, javelinas, hogs, squirrels, carp, stingrays and much more. We have profiled several bowyers, had “salutes” to pioneer bowhunters, run articles about archery history and included some tasty game recipes. Many of these articles, photos and ideas for articles came from Tradgang members, and I thank those people for their support. I encourage anyone who has ideas about getting more people (kids, women, compound converts and so on) involved in traditional archery to send those ideas and stories to Tom Colstad at [email protected]. Also welcome are hunting adventures, more how-to’s and “hero” pix.
Following is a list of contributors for the first 20 issues of TradArchers’ World magazine: Dan Little, Brad Merkel,  Shaun Webb, Dale Klug, Jack Harrison, Chris Cade, George Tsoukalas, Bill Wright, George Swan, Jr., James C. Thanks for the kind words, guys. I need help, though, coming up with more ideas for reaching more people and getting them to try traditional archery. I am having some luck placing TradArchers' World magazine in area high school/middle school libraries and have had good feedback so far. Perhaps the various state trad clubs will chime in with suggestions.

I am compiling information re. 3D shoots to include in the spring issue of TAW. Any clubs that have fun kids' events could contact me and I'll get that info in the shoot calendar. Also, the various state/province championship shoots could send photos of their men's, women's and kids'(cadet) champions for inclusion in a future issue of TAW.

I'm trying to get them (Camp Keyauwee  http://keyauwee.com/circle_c_ranch/meet_the_trainers  )converted to all trad bows for their archery program. I go tomorrow to take their archery range certification. They are strongly considering starting a horeback archery program. I hope to help them and my wife(she's getting certified too. She's a riding instructor) with making their archery program stronger. Budget crunches are causing problems though. Donations to Girl Scouts organizations across the nation are down and archery is not at the top of their list.

Hey, Bud! When you get Camp Keyaywee archery program going, please consider doing a story with pics to include in TAW and here, too. Sounds great.

Hey tom,  Your publication is Great!  who would have thought something so great would have come from the big little town of Irma? LOL.

As a teen growing up in Wausau and working in Boy Scout camps in Rhinelander, we called Irma the center of the universe.

Here is an Idea......

There is no doubt movies like the Hunger Games, The Hobit, Robin Hood and the animation Brave have sparked serious interest in youth around the world.

Maybe you can encourage kids to dress up like their favorite Character and send in pictures with them at a 3d or shooting or something.

Perhaps you could include prizes or badges or something.  The best part would be kids seeing themselves in a magazine and they can show it off to their friends!  They will all be sharing a common theme, It may not create a huge resurgence but it will work at the roots level instead of the trickle down level of advertising.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

Great idea, Charlie! Perhaps a post to that effect on here and FB would reach lots of kids. Wouldn't it be grand to have a couple of pages of kids' pix in print? Thanks again.

I'm not sure if the Oklahoma Selfbow Society (OSS) advertises it in TAW or not, but every year they hold a selfbow jamboree (OJAM) during the OK spring break week. It's a great 3-4 day camp-out with a fun, family-friendly environment. All the kids that are there on Sat. morning get a free rattan bow crafted for each kid, by our own OSS members. My daughter & I have gone the last 2 yrs. and have plans for this to be an annual event for our family. (Vacation is already scheduled for this year.    :readit:

I really enjoy your magazine, and applaud you for continuing to pass on or shared passion!    :clapper:

Great suggestions! Is there much interest from local TV stations to "cover" events like OJAM, MOJAM,and state/club shoots? Do clubs call newspapers to see if they they will run public service announcements in advance of their events? Those are usually free. Same with radio?

Not that I'm aware of. I've never seen anything in a newspaper (though I'm quite a ways away from where they hold it), and haven't heard or seen anything on TV or radio either. Not a bad idea though! I will hafta mention it to one of the guys from the OSS. Thanks!
