Yucca quiver finish?

One of my winter projects is making a yucca quiver from the cool stalk of yucca that I got from Sal at Mojam this year.
So, I'm thinking a light coat of spray poly to protect it. Any thoughts or other ideas/examples from anyone who has done this..?

Poly wood be great.
You could also do a massey finish to protect it a bit more.

Thats what I would do.

Tru-oil or danish oil will protect and toughen it.

Here's mine I made from Sal several years ago. 5 coats of poly but if I do it again I would use spar varnish. It's all I use now for my bows and everything else works much better. Not a great pick sorry.

I have made many hiking sticks out of Yucca stalks.  I put 8 coats of semi gloss finish wipe on Minwax poly on them with a light 0000 steal wool rub down  between coats.  The finish comes out real nice.  I sand and sand the yucca making the stalk very smooth.  If you are spraying over the rough exterior I would use the spray Minwax.

Since it's single digits in the garage and barn I can't spray so went with some slightly thinned satin poly wiped on. Put 2 coats on, so far, in the basement shop. Seems to be coming along nicely. Thanks for the tips Gents.

Thank you for posting the picture Tracy!!!
That was a quick fix, let's go stumping in an hour moment. That was the only thing I had to slap on the quiver. The real fix will come when I get some nice leather and dress it up right.

ronp.  Big Yucca like that is hard to find.  My largest pieces are 3" in diameter.  I get mine off the desert in New Mexico.

Ron, I got mine from the same guy that Paul did, he's a school teacher from California that flys in to the Missouri primitive shoot called Mojam. He brings a few unfinished peices with him and trades them most of the time. Can't remember Sal's last names but is a great guy to visit with and makes some good bows.

I got mine off of a fm road out in the country. Some of the area had been dozed to build a fence. The guy thought I was crazy for wanting the stalk until I told him what I wanted it for!
