Rick Welch Dakota Bow Help ?
« on: February 23, 2014, 09:59:00 PM »
Just ordered a Dakota Bow from Rick. 61 length 45#@28 draw. I normally shoot split finger at 28 draw length, but going to try Rick's method. When i draw back using Rick's method, i add about 2 inch's
of draw, making my draw length 30 inch's.  I believe that makes the poundage around 49 pound's which is to heavy for me. Should i have ordered 45# @ 30 draw or 41# @ 28 which would make my poundage 45 pound's. Also 61 length or 64. When i fletched my arrows so my nose touch's the cock feather, i had to move my fletching forward 3 inch's from the valley of the nock. Would like your opinion if you shoot Rick's style or shoot his bow's. Thank's John

you'd lots rather it be a little too light than a little too heavy for sure. He knows exactly what his bow gains per inch after 28 so just let him know what poundage you want at your draw and let him make it from there.

Also discuss the 61" length with him. If you're really drawing to 30", you might be happier with a longer bow. I take it from your post that you haven't actually been to Rick's class. It is possible that you are overdrawing the bow.  3" from the valley of the nock to the back of the cock feather seems excessive to me.  I use 2", and Rick himself uses less than that.  I wonder if you're coming around in a "J" at the end of your draw and contracting your back muscles, or if you're just continuing to haul back on the bow?

Thank's McDave
Drawing the bow back to my ear lobe and touching the cock feather with my nose. I don't feel i'am over drawing or hauling back on bow. I have a big melon, but it seems to me 3" is a lot from the valley of the nock to the cock feather. Not coming around in a j, i have to pull straight back with my draw, it feel's more comfortable that way.

John, I would have to see you shoot.  I draw a little over 29 inches and I shoot a 62 inch bow. I ordered mine 46 at 29.  Rick does the knuckle to earlobe  but  I use my cavalier tab to my cheek bone then lock my thumb under my jaw.  It just works best for me. Everyone's head is different but 3 inches seems really long.  I also, can not bury my nose behind the feather like rick  because I shoot with glasses.

Thank's Night Stalker
I just got off the phone with Rick. I had him change my bow length to 64 instead of 61, like McDave suggested. Also found my draw to be 30" instead of 28. So i had Rick change my draw length to 30" instead of 28". I use to shoot split finger's and my draw was 28". Using Rick's method, knuckle to earlobe and touching nose to feather i gained 2" in my draw. I did my fletching over and found out it is 2.5" from the valley of the nock and not 3".  I Talked to Rick and he said he had several student's with a 3" to valley of the nock and even longer. Guess some of us just have melon's for a head.

I am only 5'7" but have really wide shoulders or something or at least that's what Mike Treadway thought.  I have a small crooked head. I would like to shoot a 64 inch heavier than my current Dakota to see how the cast was.
