My Coonhound, Arrow - Bloodtrail
« on: March 02, 2014, 09:15:00 PM »
I named her during a time I couldn't shoot. Now it's confusing when we stump shoot but that's another story.

I still have a bunch of training to do but she has successfully followed several blood trails I have laid down in the field from blood I saved from a buck.

I haven't been able to put her on a "live" blood trail but I'm hoping I can this year.

She is 2.7 yrs old and 3/4 Black & Tan Coonhound + 1/4 Black Lab.

She is mostly the family dog.  I have two small boys here.

Beauty! I'd love to watch a dog work a trail, I lost a buck once. It still sucks to think about, I wish I had known then about trailing dogs. May have ended up differently...

That's a good name. My K-9 partner from 2005 until 2011 was named Arrow. People good and bad still talk about him. I wish you both the best on your journey together.

I didn't see the double post either. This one has more activity so I'll post here as well.

Tim, take a look at that hound. Now that's the best coon dog I ever seen or heard about, and I didn't teach him a damn thing.

Coming from a guy who (attempted to) trained a half arsed blood tracker I think a dog will either do it or not depending on how much joy and reward they find in doing it.

Mine found a couple bucks, neither one of which hit ideally but its been years and he has lost interest. I don't think he would do it now at all.

I agree whole heartedly. A dog either has it or it doesn't. Been thinking of getting a dog for this purpose. Great pics thanks for sharing.

Hey, "just a hunter" those are some nice pics.

My dog, Arrow finds the blood like bees to honey but she get's so excited I don't know yet if she will stay on a "live" trail for the duration.

In the  yard here it works.

I'm pretty sure I'll have a chance this year for the real deal.

I know some shotgun / farm hunters whom I think will call me when they have a deer down and I may post on a local hunting site asking for a chance to come and follow a trail...

If she gets that excited when she finds blood and has a decent head on her shoulders she will do great.  Her part is actually the easy part.  The hard part is for you as the handler to learn how to read her and let her do her thing.
Having a dog that can blood trail has added a whole new element to my bowhunting!
