Backstop ideas....
«

Gents,
I have about ten yards in my basement to shoot. I'd like to have a backstop curtain that I can remove when not shooting.
Any recommendations for a basement backstop?

I use a stall mat on my fence outside for a backstop.

It is a little heavy to be moving a lot, but it stops a 730gn arrow from a 70#@31 recurve.

Not quite what you're looking for, but the thick rubber horse stall mats work really well. You could bolt it right to the wall if you wanted

I use a rubber horse stall mat in my basement. I screwed eyelets into the rafter. Then i drilled two holes into the horse mat and attached braided metal line with hooks through the holes. I intended for it to be removable but after I got it in place I decided it was WAY too much work to take it down and hang it back up.

Tractor Supply is where i got my mat, they had two sizes. I have the larger size, if you got the smaller size it would be easier to remove when you are not shooting. You should also zip tie cardboard or carpet to the map, I have mushroomed a few carbon arrows shooting directly into the mat.

I got a used but free rubber truck bed mat. the arrow goes through about 3" and stops, a little deeper with broadheads.

No offense BassBow, but if you need a backstop at 10 yards...
Seriously though, this is all I use in my basement.

I came up with another idea. Been having some financial challenges, so been very cheap and trying to be inventive. If you have any kind of grain elevators nearby, they may have broken conveyer belt laying around. I contacted the grain growers coop and cut three 7 foot lengths of a broken belt (about 18- 20 inches wide) and bolted them on a 2 x 4 that I hung from the basement rafters. I overlapped the sections slightly to leave no spots an arrow could get through. Works great and was free.

Yep the key to belts and the horse stall matt is hang them loosely. I have a horse stall matt works good but still get a point stuck through it no and them from a 47# longbow with carbon shafts. If the matt is not loose they really go half way through it. Loose carpet strips work pretty well also.

You could hang a carpet behind the target. That should stop an arrow with field point.

Tooner, weirder things have happened : ). In all seriousness, I have three young sons that will be shooting in the basement with me. The block looks like a nice target.
Thank you all for the great advice!

Stall mat works great outside for sure as has already been said. I don't know that its the kind of thing you want to put up and take down every time you shoot. If you leave it up its amazing stuff.

Thinking about building a wooden frame and affixing the stall mat(s)very similar to Jeff's setup above. Maybe some type of wheels on it so I can move it around where I want?
