I am curious what type of mouth diaphram calls people are using.  I have several slate and box calls, but a diaphram would be better when your hands are ready with the bow.  I have used many diaphram calls for elk, but want to start using them for turkeys.

Zink signature series diaphragms have worked well for me, just ordered a new three pack.

There are many many many options for mouth calls.  I call competitively and can just tell you to find a call that will work for you.  Stay away from the aggressive cut calls.  For general turkey hunting I would recommend a mouth call with a ghost cut.  Either a 2.5 or 3 reed call with something between .003 and .004 for the top reed.  Most of the production calls on the market Primos, Flextone, etc all will make a call that will work for you.  If you are a little more into the consistency you get from smaller companies I would recommend Tom Teaser Custom Calls or Hendershot game calls.  Both of these folks make a real nice ghost cut call that are easy to run for a beginner and stage quality for seasoned callers.

I've always found the closer the tom gets the drier my mouth gets!  I sound like a dying hen when the tom is close.  I can't produce a sound to save my life!  Sure is fun though...  I've always bought the call with the little hump in them that helps align it with the top of my mouth.

Thanks everyone for the info about mouth diaphram calls.  I am going to get some.  In fact one of the guys here sent me a PM and is going to send me a couple diaphrams to try.  How nice is that???  
I watched the video attached to this subject and it was good.  
Question - is there any other video I could access to learn the types of calls and improve (yelps, putts, purr, etc).  I usually get a couple birds each year, but always trying to improve my calling and hunting skills.

Go to YouTube and follow Scott Ellis, he has some great videos on improving your calling. He also has a DVD called mouth call magic. It's for people who want to sound better.

Also they key is learning how a diaphragm call works. Knowing what calls, depending ion the cuts, produce what  type sound. Learn how to call making a clean front  end yelp.

I have really come to love the Primos true double calls.  I have not really checked out the true custom calls. But have tried a bunch of the major companies calls, and none sound better to me, or the turkeys from my experience. They can be tougher to find, so if I find some I pick a couple up and set aside. They are thicker, but I find them easy to call with.

There is not a true "custom" mouth call unless a competition caller stretches the latex  to his preference.  Besides that all the call companies are ordering their latex and tape from the same 2 or 3 companies. Different latex thickness and cuts can make the calls sound different. But pretty much they are all the same.  Some are better quality than others.

Pot calls can be custom to the desired surface and pot choice. Slate, glass, copper, aluminum are all surface choices. And they can make the pot out of any type wood.  

Personally I feel that different sounds are thrown form different types of strikers . You can take a Purple Heart striker and run it on a slate, glass and aluminum pot call and it all sounds similar. Take a cedar striker  run it on all surfaces and they all sound about the same too. I like to collect strikers

Box calls can be custom to the wood type and angle of the paddle and box!

I love collecting box calls and pot calls. I have more than the average joe.

If you buy a mouth call that you don't really like. Before throwing it away cut the latex to a desired cut and try it before throwing it in the trash. You might be able to produce a better sound by doing this.

There are several small diaphragm builders, myself included, who build some of the best mouth calls out there period.  And for what it's worth I do put together custom calls for folks.

Good videos and information.  I appreciate all the information from everyone.  Looking forward to receiving and trying a diaphram call that one of the guys here is sending me.  I will sure give it a workout this spring. My usual calls are slates and some box calls.  
I have been checking out Ytube videos for calling instructions as well.  Have called in lots of elk, but this is a "different bird".

I make and use wingbone turkey calls, but not good enough to use them alone.  Can only make a few yelps.
