Point weight/insert question
« on: March 13, 2014, 09:34:00 AM »
So I'm going to be making up some Easton FMJ's and I was wondering if there was an advantage one way or the other for.... Using a 300gr head with the standard HIT inserts or going with a 100gr brass insert and 200gr head.  Or.. There is always the option of the 75gr brass HIT insert.

What does everyone use on their FMJ's?

Doesn't make much difference, IMO.  Depends on what head you want to shoot. Luckily, can go either way. Can also refine your selection with the various weight adaptors for broadheads.

X2 what Orion said. I use hot melt glue so I can change adapters easily. Works great and opens up the possibilities for many more broad heads. As long as the weight adds up to the same total ( or very close ) I find my arrows shoot perfect with any combo of insert/ head.

Sounds good, does any of the inserts increase the "toughness" of the arrow?

Hi,
Brass is much stronger than aluminum, also add footing saves arras.

Steel, brass, and aluminum go in that order of toughness I believe. That said I have never broken an insert to say it has practical application. I usually let my desired weight dictate my choice.

I go through this with one of my setups.  Comes down to the broadhead you want to be able to use.

If I'm wanting to shoot something like Big Jim's Big 3, then, obviously, I go with the standard insert and the 300 gr head.  I'm not aware of any other heads that really compare to that particular head as far as being a solid, 3 bld, with 1 1/2" diameter.

Remember though, adding a longer insert increases the arrow's spine.
