A fun evening in the woods (Too)
« on: September 19, 2007, 12:06:00 AM »
Much like Recurve50LBS's story, but with a couple minor differences.

First chance to hunt this season, and my oh my, what a time!        I had a ladder stand overlooking a foodplot, and started up it, only to back down, and hunt from the ground nearby.  I took my "stand" between two small oak trees, and made like wood for a while.  The wind was steady in my face, and I knew a doe with a couple yearlings had been hanging out there.

About 6:30 PM, I sensed some movement behind me and to my left.  I slowly turned to see a deer which had walked up behind me!  Now, you gotta understand, I had done NOTHING on the order of scent control.  Worked all day, just pulled on a camo t-shirt and hit the woods.

As the deer moved through the blackberry briars behind me, I realized it was a little buck.  A very pretty and sleek forkhorn.  I bowhunted years ago, but this was my first year back, and I'd never taken a deer with a "stick and string".  Needless to say, I was PUMPED!  Unfortunately, so was the buck.  He must have gotten a little whiff, because as he moved closer, I could see that he was acting a little spooky.  I think the wind was strong enough, that it confused him some as to where the bad man smell was coming from.     :readit:

Neat story, Curtis.  Sounds like you had a nice night, no deer were injured in the production of this story, and tommorrow's another day!

PS- You may want to carry THREE huntin' arrows from here on out!  ;^)

A Quiet Arrow is more important than the bow. If they are hissing you need to change your fletching and/or helical etc., If you can hear them making noise you know a deer can. Best of Luck to You.

I'm with Ron...a quiet bow is great, but a quiet arrow is even better. Around here, I aim very, very low on deer because 9/10, they'll drop like an anvil at ANY bow shot, no matter how quiet the bow/arrow. Even on lightly hunted private land they are still very jumpy. Though nowhere near as wired as the Texas deer I've hunted....not sure how anyone gets an arrow in one unless you aim at the dirt below them.  :biglaugh:

I always thought of a quiet arrow as being part of a quiet bow. Does you very little good if one is quiet and the other isn't.

I seen his sister yesterday. She came in and spoted me moving. After she head bobbed about 10 times she looked like she calmed down. When I shot she took a right and my arrow slid by her shoulder with no problem. She came back for round 2,but I waved the white flag.We are set for a rematch but the date is unknown at this time.  :knothead:
