Hogs: 3 or 2 blade?
« on: March 27, 2014, 10:12:00 AM »
Hello, I'm new to the forum and I'm new to bowhunting: I'm Angelo from Rome, Italy. I shoot a Black Widow PSA III, 51#@29", my arrows are Easton FMJ 400 with brass inserts and 125 grains tips, 515 grains of total weight (about 10 grains per pound). With this setup do you think is it possible to shoot 3 blades broadheads for hogs? Or is it better a 2 blades?
Thanks in advance
Angelo

Welcome from Kentucky!

You will get both answers but in my opinion on a hog I would use a two blade. Reason being a three blade may work fine on a small or medium hog, but if you get lucky and a really big one gives you a shot I would feel much better with a two blade going through that plate. I always like to plan for a bad hit. Its bound to happen if you hunt long enough, so plan for it.

Angelo, Welcome to the forum, I shoot a very similar set-up. I have taken 10 hogs from 150-300#, 8 with a 3 blade woodsman, one with a VPA, and one with a magnus 4-blade, all one shot kills. Get your heads scary sharp, and study the shot placement guide on this forum. Proper placement and scary sharp are very effective on hogs. Good hunting, Todd

I shoot the same weight and arrow weight although I have only killed 9 hogs I use the 3 blade wensel woodsmen. One hog was about 200#s the rest about 100 , I got complete penetration on all and a passthrough on one .Three blades work great on everything they are better with marginal hits imagin a 2 blade passing by an artery where a 3 blade would cut it....Tim

Welcome Angelo,

I used about the same setup 2012 season, I used NAP Hellrazers (3 blade). I had 100% pass through on all hogs shot. I will add, I do try to get the smaller hogs for eating.

Im with TJ on this one, ive shot Boars that weighed less than 200 and if they have a thick shield there is almost no getting through that..i think Terry has some good pictures here of that.  most sows and little ones or boars without a thick shield are no problem with any deer set up

I would go with a low profile 3 blade like Woodsmans.

I shoot a 2 blade single bevel with my 51@28 ACS CX; but I think a low angle 3 blade would do just fine out of your set up. Welcome to TG!   :archer:
