Carbon confusion?
« on: March 30, 2014, 07:35:00 PM »
Iam shooting CE 150's and Iam needing a weaker spine shaft. Are the CE 90's weaker? What other carbon shaft brands would be equivlant to 90's? After shooting carbons for over a year Iam still confused about spines. Each company seems to have a different number. Iam shooting a R/D longbow, 45# at 30in. draw. Thank you.

Yes CE 90's are weaker than 150's. I'm shooting one bow I have that is 45@28 and using 250 up front with the 150's. It probably would be easier for you to go down in spine though. You might do well with a Gold Tip in 3555 also.

One more thing I forgot to mention,it looks like the CE90's go down to 9/32 where as the other CE's are 5/16. It looks like the Gold Tips stay at 5/16 through out the shafts.

Same experience here on the 150s. I have them REALLY loaded up to fly right.

I like the GT3555s with 175 up front, or even 1535s with 125 points.

The Gold tip 3555's are now available in 32" length and should work well for you. The 1535's are typically better for 45lb draw but with your draw length being 30"s and the 1535's being only 30"s that can pose a problem.
The 90's would work, but they are only 30"s also.

good luck, BIgJIm

Carbon Express appears to have also changed the spine on those arrows...looks like if you want a bit weaker spine go to the older 90 if you can find them and new 90 if you want to go even weaker...there also appears to be a diameter change going from 150 to 90 which will affect dynamic spine a bit...I like Easton arrows for their consistent and easily identified spine with my favourite being the Full Metal Jacket

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

The older CE 90 had a spine of .530 and the new CE 90 have a spine of .588.The old CE 150 had a spine of .487 and the new CE 150 have a spine of .495.There isn't really any equivalent to the CE 90 in other brands, close. Most other carbon shafts you have .500 spine and a .600 spine carbon arrows. But to most of the lighter spine carbon are about a 30" arrow shaft, some may be longer but check before you buy.I bought some dark grain GT 15/35(.600 spine) blems from Big Jim and they were 32" long.Just check the arrow length of the lighter spine carbons, you have a 30" draw length. You could probably tune either a .500 or .600 spine carbon depending on point weight and length.A .500 spine at full length may work better with your 30" draw length.

There are a few things you can try to weaken those 150's.  How is the shelf cut on your R/D longbow? If it's positive of center, you can weaken the arrow by going to a thinner side plate to move the arrow closer to center.  Again if your shelf is cut positive of center, raising the brace height a little also has the affect of moving the arrow closer to center thus weakening a little.  You can also increase tip weight.  What do you use for string silencers (if any)?  Going with a lighter silencer material to give the string more speed will weaken the arrow as well.  All of these things are really tweaks but you might be surprised at the affect.  Just something to think about.  Good luck in your tuning.
