What is the best material for making string silencers from yarn? Will acrylic yarn work? Thanks

Acrylic will work just fine.

I use 100% wool. It is called Fisherman's Wool and the brand is Lion. I get it at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. A skein of the stuff is around $10 and you have enough yarn to make silencers for a looooong time. I like the Fisherman's Wool because of the way the silencer looks after it is finished.

i raid my wifes yarn stock for whatever colors i may want. no idea what any of it is though. she has a couple hundred pounds i think. literally. only time she noticed was when i used a nice looking brown that was far more expensive than any yarn should be.

note; i just asked my wife what it was, it was a soft alpaca wool yarn, and now i'm in the doghouse, again.

I know it's gotta be simple to make them, but I don't know how. Would someone tell/show me how?

I use wool (taken from wife's supply) and wrapped it around a credit card, I think that is mentioned in the thread posted above. Best string silencers I've used and pretty much free if you know a knitter.

I like using Hush puppies.
It's a bit more expensive, but it works.
I like helping out the tradgang family too..

I use wool.  Likely any yarn will work.

But I have wool on hand.

One more little trick I do on the woolies is I made two cardboard templates by tracing around a beer can and after shooting my woolies to fluff them out I squeeze them between the templates and trim off the straggler ends. I keep fluffing and trimming around them until they are uniform round balls. Very neat looking.

I bought all shades, thicknesses, and materials of yarn at the local discount store to tie flies.  The same stuff works great for string silencers.

Not that it's much of an issue but Wal-Mart sells camo yarn. I really wouldn't have gone that route but an 8 year old girl complemented me on my "rainbow" colored silencers at Denton Hill on a course 3 years ago.

I also use raw wool, right off the sheep.

I use the whole sheep.  I give up a few fps, but it's really quiet.

My daughter has a small alpaca herd.  In felted wool it makes about as good a hunting jacket or vest that one can get.  For sweaters, nothing comes close to it.  A little bit goes a long way to dampen bow vibrations and quiet things down.  I should check to see how much she has on hand at the moment, she sells out of it at times.  Maybe I should start making sweater vests in the tans and dark browns she has.

We had 15 youth girls shooting at the range and they commented on my "pom-poms" on the string.  I thought it was funny, and said they can call them that if they wish.  Mine are acrylic colors in black/tan/brown and black/grey/white.
