FMJ footing questions
« on: April 16, 2014, 03:11:00 PM »
Good afternoon TG. I am tired of cheap arrows that don't fly well, and FMJ's have always done real well for me.

I am going to foot them just to be safe, any idea which size alum shaft I would need? FMJ's would be 300 spine.

I am going to use JB Weld on the footing for sure, not sure about using the jb weld on the HIT inserts as I don't want the jb weld to get inside the actual insert, thus not allowing me to screw field points in, any advice for getting past that little issue?

I footed my Axis 300 black shaft with a 2016.I don't think it will help a FMJ from the end of the shaft from possibly cracking or splitting. It will just move the bend point to the end of the foot.I have standard Axis they have split the end without a footing. But have not had a FMJ split but have bent one.For my Axis I always just use the HIT insert epoxy that comes with them or a slow cure 24 hr. epoxy.

I use the little collars that 3rivers sells.  No complaints at all, and easier to install, in my opinion.

Just started shooting the FMJ. I really like the shafts. I had some of the collars from some axis shafts. I really like the transition the collars provide from the broadhead to the shaft.

I think I used 2016's for footing my FMJ 300's - I can check in a couple days.  Really helped keep them from bending and splitting.  I had some problem with the un-footed shafts when shooting long heads like Grizzly that have a lot of leverage on a glancing hit.

Any recommendations for how to keep the jb weld from getting into the threads of the HIT insert?

Tried Victory VAP shafts, liked the arrows but the outserts sucked imo. Down to half a dozen already-back to the trusty FMJ's for me. The arrows mushrooming is caused by the weak glue/epoxy used, hence the jb weld.

I got my TallTines back, ill be shooting that thru elk, deer, pronghorn, black bear and eventually moose bighorn and mtn goats.

Broadheads will be VPA 2 & 3 blade 150's depending on the game im chasing or which arrow gets pulled from my Absorkee hip quiver (awesome by the way!)

I haven't used the HIT inserts but some things that may help would be:put the epoxy only on the insert and any excess should squeeze out the front rather than get pushed ahead of the insert. You could also plug the rear of the insert with a small ball of bow string wax or cover it with a small piece of duct tape. You could also find the appropriate sized screw, one that would go full length in the insert and use paste wax on any part that you don't want the epoxy to adhere to,such as the rear of the insert and screw.

A .300 FMJ is a very stiff arrow.  You must be shooting a really heavy BH.
Super Curves.....
Covert Hunter Hex9h
Morrison Max 6 ILF
Mountain Muffler strings to keep them quiet
Shoot as much weight as you can with accuracy
