Question about hog tackle
« on: April 16, 2014, 09:50:00 PM »
Okay, so I'm going on a hog hunt soon in southern Arkansas and I have no idea what will work the best as far as arrows, broadheads, etc.  I'm wondering what everyone else is using, what works best.

I've got a 48# take down longbow I'm planning on taking, and possibly another take down recurve I still need to make, possibly around 55#-ish.  Anyway, I just purchased some Gold Tip 55/75 carbons to take, instead of the woodies I'm used to.  The only reason for this is for ease of switching out heads if need be and because I'm getting tired of making arrows for every hunt.

So the arrows are full length, and I'm planning on leaving them that way.  They're 8.2 grains/inch.  What would be ideal as far as broadheads, any added weight FOC, etc?  I want to be able to get good flight, obviously, but also want as much "thump" and penetration as possible.  With a 125 gr. head I'm figuring right around 400 grains total, which doesn't seem like enough.  But maybe I'm figuring something wrong - it has happened once   :knothead:

Thanks in advance for the help!

Unless you have a real long draw length, you probably need more weight up front. Maybe a 100 grain insert. I've always liked snuffers for most everything, but lately I've used the big magnus 2 blade( magnus 1 I think). As far as sharpness, arrow flight, and penetration, I don't know how a head could get much better.

Keep your shots low and forward on pigs, and quartering away on a big one is never a bad idea.

Thanks Todd.  Here's a really stupid question - I've never used arrows that I've added weight to.  So when I add the inserts, how do I make sure they stay up front and not slide through the arrow shaft?  Do I glue them in, or do they just friction fit in there?

Joe,

I beleive Todd is referring to the brass threaded RPS inserts that replace the aluminum factory ones. That is a very common way of adding weight to the front of an any carbon arrow. GT also has a weight system that allows you to add weight to the back of the threaded insert. When I have shot them in the past I have used hot melt to secure my add on weights together to keep them from vibrating loose. Check out this page from the GT website for a better explination.  http://goldtip.com/componentlanding.aspx?page=2

You may have misunderstood "insert" an insert is the item that is glued into the end of the arrow that has the threads that you screw in the broad head or field point into, they come in different weights, Standard, 50 grain, 75 grain, 100 grain ect. ect..

oops quail beat me to the button but you get the idea.

I think if you start playing with that setup, you will find 125 gr heads way too light for even full length 5575s, but maybe not. I think they come 32" full length, which is a lot and will leave them a bit softer. You might want to consider trying a 175 gr head, or, the GT standard inserts will accept screw-in weights from the rear. I really like this system as you just pop the nock out and use the GT long allen wrench (36")to insert or remove 50 gr or 100 gr insert weights without having to heat anything up.

You may still lose arrows - even carbon arrows. If you get complete penetration, but not a complete pass-through, that pig is going to roll on your protruding arrow and make it a 2-piece. I shot a pig with my 43# RER XR. The shot was good, with about 9 inches of arrow and a 175 gr Zwickey 2-blade sticking out the far side. Mr pig decided he didn't like that and rolled on the arrow as a final act of defiance.
