Purpleheart for limb core ????
« on: September 20, 2007, 04:12:00 PM »
Just wondering if any of you have ever heard of or used purpleheart for limb cores. It sure wouldn't be my first or second or even fourth choice. The reason that I asked is that I have a custom bow that the bowyer used purpleheart for the limb cores. The bow shoots pretty nice. It does have a small amount of hand shock but not too much and it has decent speed. I just can't help but wonder how much better it might shoot if the limb cores had been made out of yew or action boo or one of the other more common materials. I don't know but purpleheart might be a good core material I just haven't heard of too many using it. Have any of you?  Thanks.  Brokenwing

Yup, I have heard of it.  It's not a bad wood.  But it wouldn't be my first choice if I custom-ordered one either...

The last bow I built has a purpleheart core with red elm outer lams. It`s 57# at27". Shoots a 580 gr. arrow at 170 fps, with no hand shock. Every body that shoots it,wants it. But I made this one for me.
