Woodsmans Really Can Be Sharpened

Season opens here in TN on Sat so thought I better sharpen some BH's.  I ordered a file from 3rivers.  12 inches long and about 1.5 inch wide.  This was the trick to get the factory grind off of them.  Takes a bunch of strokes but it worked fine.  I would hit one side about three times and rotate.  Ended up would work down enough that you could see the copper colored brazing up towards the point when it was getting about right.  Lightened the strokes and then went to a DMT fine stone.  Heavy pressure for a while and then lightened up you can fill when they are getting sharper.  Finished by pushing flat on ceramic rod on a upward angle.  I brought rod out to edge of work bench and then pushed up with broadhead that I have on a piece of shaft cut about 8 inches long.  Overall about 6-8 rotated light strokes per side.  then hit leather one time per side.  They will pop hairs like the way a 2 blade will.  First time I have ever really been able to get a WW sharp.  Trick must be getting it flat and factory grind off of it with the file.  Now we will see how easy they touch up come sat with any luck.

I bought some last year and never did get them sharp enough to shave hair.     I think I was using too much pressure.

I've been getting my razorcaps shaving sharp this year and now I cant find my WW's to try them again.

You got it exactly! They truly are an awesome head, and with this very simple technique, I can get them as sharp as any of my two blades.

Now, if I can just learn to get my stuff as sharp as Ray Hammonds Grizzlys

I've always thought the WW sharpened very well.  As stated, once the factory grind is removed, its time for light strokes. I am not crazy about the point on these heads, but they get super sharp and will shave hair easily.  The point can be snipped or filed and resharpened to a pyramid vs needle design.  When this extra step is done and the head is appropriately sharpened, it can definately do the job.

I have used the Woodsman head for the past two years and have had great results with them. They sharpen well for me with a file then I go to a fine Arkansas stone and then to a leather strap to finish them off. I have had complete pass through's even out of my selfbows.

I used Charlie's technique to sharpen the ones I'm using this year.  Never knew you could get a broadhead so stinking sharp with just a file.  The real trick, I think, is to use progressively lighter strokes after you establish the edge.  By the time I was done, I was just BARELY using the weight of the head itself.  And they're SHARP!!!

In fact, I think I prefer the edge from the file, versus a stone or hone finish.  When the hair on my arm comes off and leaves a baby-butt smooth patch of skin, that's good enough!

For an update on performance.  28 yard shot out of 56 at 28 lb FF Silvertip Recurve.  400 spine Easton Axis arrows and WW glued onto long adapters about 170 grains upfront.  Slight quartering away shot.  Through the broiler room and arrow passed through bottom of opposite shoulder on a actual weighed 100 lb field dressed doe this Sat evening.  She went about 70 yards and was expired in less than 5 seconds.  Watched her pile up and was able to drive truck to her which was nice seeing that it was 93 degrees when I went to my stand on Sat evening.  A 10 yard shot I wouldn't have thought much about it, but this was a preety good poke I thought to get a pass through out of the shoulder on a good sized deer.
