Not on a bow hunt but a spring trip for canoe/fish. Had a cow moose wake me one night munching the grass outside my tent, pretty cool.

The year of the UPS strike there was a bad bear on Ensign.  A few guys were after that one.  I never seen anyone after deer on our fall trips.  We did meet a couple of trad hunters after moose one year on the Disappointment portage.

I've been to the boundary Waters 3 times.  Its an incredible place.  All 3 times were mid summer and fish were on the brain so I wasn't looking for deer sign.

I imagine moose and bear will be as plentiful or more plentiful than deer but it sounds like it would be a fun hunt in true wilderness.

Thanks to all for the valuable info.  We will make the trip next year and are deciding on timing.  Fish are very much on the agenda, but it looks like deer could be also in mid September.

Done the fishing thing there.

Here is a link to all the info. Problem will be ice if you kill something.

I have canoed it twice, but don't remember ever seeing any deer. Must be some, and it would be fun, just don't know how productive it would be.

I've fished it with my son in the late spring early summer and seen moose and grouse but no deer. Granted we didn't really venture far from the water or the portages at all. We went gunflint side.

I've thought about a deer hunt and think it would be a great trip. If I were doing it i'd consider an area that is recovering from a burn next to some more mature stuff.

Good advice on the burn!  Big virgin timber does not make for good whitetail habitat.
