Exotic horn for limb tips?
« on: June 17, 2014, 10:52:00 PM »
Anybody here know where I might be able to get some horn for limb tips. I need something black, like maybe impala, but any black colored horn that is suitable for limb tips would do.

I am having a new bow built and really want this, and my bowyer says he does not have any.

If anyone might have a few small pieces, or can direct me to a place where I can obtain it, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Bisch

Thanks for the help guys!

Hey Kirk, does that water buff have any ridges like impala horn does?

I have found several places (thanks, James) that have buffalo horn that is carved to look like impala, but can't seem to find any real impala horn anywhere.

Also go to the big auction sight and search "taxidermy skull" There are plenty and not expensive.

Blessbock horn has ridges just like impala. Lots of the knife supply houses carry one or the other.

Brian at Tall Tines uses Kudu. It's black when you look directly at it but looking through it from the side, where light can pass through, it's a little translucent. I've had it on a couple of bows by him. Not the best pic but you might be able to zoom in on the tips.

Nope.... no ridges like impala, but has grain texture..... But realistically once you get your tips shaped you won't have any ridges left anyway.

How about using something from one of your kills like deer antler of hog tusks ... I have sheep, antelope, caribou, and moose if any of those would work.

Antelope and bison horn both work but come out smooth.  If you want black with ridges, try soaking sheep horn over night in water based black dye; it works for me.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.
