I bought a used Bob Lee Signature recurve a couple of weeks ago. It arrived just as advertised on Thursday. I was going on a meat hunt this weekend with my rifle since it was the end of doe and spike season. I almost didn't bring the bow since I haven't had a chance to shoot it but I thought it would be a good opprotunity to shoot the bow in the down time in between hunts.
I used to work in an archery shop and even ran a small business out of the garage when I was going to college. I shot compounds and finally "graduated" to a recurve. I shot that for years until I moved to Austin from SE Texas about 8 years ago. Between work and not having a place to hunt, I never picked archery back up.
I decided to get back into it for this upcoming year. I decided to get a recurve to just shoot around with just to get the feel back and then decide if I wanted to hunt with one this coming deer season.
Which brings me to this weekend. I shot a deer with my rifle on Saturday morning so I decided to try and shoot the recurve. As most of you know, it's kinda like riding a bike. You never really forget. Well, I decided to bring it to the stand that we see hogs at occasionally.
I had five does that ate for about an hour at the stand. About 15 minutes before dark, they got nervous and trotted off, tails at half mast. After watching them trot off, I looked back at the feeder and I had 6-8 hogs making a beeline (almost at a full run) into the corn I had spread. I picked out the orange one that was about 20 yards, picked a spot, and let the arrow fly. What a great feeling to see the all white feathers disappear into the side of that hog. I'm still replaying the shot in my mind. She ended up running quite a ways because I shot a little far back (missed the vitals but must have hit an artery) and a hogs vitals are more forward than a deer. The broadhead went inbetween two ribs on the entry and destroyed a rib on the way out. We found the arrow about 10 yards from where I shot her.
One thing I will say, I have never seen a blood trail like this one. There was blood everywhere.
