upper limb stiff, question

I posted this in bowyers bench already but a lot of yall dont go there as much as this subforum. sorry for the double entry, but this is a ? for shooters more than bowyers...

have any of yall ever shot a bow tillered with upper limb 1/8" strong? I know even tiller is supposedly better for 3 under and 1/8" strong lower limb is same for split shooters. I think it doesnt matter to me and how I shoot, I just raise or lower the nocking point a fuzz. I constantly get a nock high when I bareshaft bc my form is bad and I twist the string a bit... question is:

what if I made the upper limb a bit stiff on a new curve I am making? like 1/8"? Anyone ever shot one like that and what did it do to nock point and noise?

I would assume it would make you have a lower nocking point and maybe a bit quieter than bottom stiff for a 3 under shooter, but are there any no no's to doing that?

What you're proposing is to build the bow out of tiller.  The limbs will come back so unevenly it will be difficult to adjust your nock height enough to compensate.  There's a reason for positive tiller on the top limb.

Some who stringwalk have success with a slightly negative tiller.

In a recurve it will also make it noisy. In a longbow you may get by with it. I know some have done this. Must be shooting style for them I guess. I shoot bows with even or 1/8th less in the bottom and both shoot for me just make adjustment in nock location. I also shoot three under. In a recurve may be noisier when not even.

Well I shoot ILF limbs on a DAS riser and shoot 1/8" negative tiller for the best arrow flight and quietest bow.  John shoots the same set up.

So give it a try and shoot it a bunch before you apply finish.  If you don't like it, then even it up.

A lot of tournament shooters shoot negative tiller.

I buy a lot of old bows and once got a 1964 K that was about 1/4" negative-should have been the other way around. It shot OK but I hated the look so I re tillered it to be 1/4" positive. With nock adjustment both shot about the same to 25 yds but I could not stand the look of that fat bottom!

I agree with Wingnut . If it ends up too noisy for you then side tiller the bottom limb to bring it to dead even tiller. It will not reduce the poundage much to get 1/8 inch.

Thanks guys. Ill give it a try and see how she shoots. Riser is roughed out now and tip overlays curing. So tomorrow ill get to see I hope

Mike's not the only great bowyer that likes a bit of negative tiller, Morrison does too.  If it's wrong then somebody better tell all those 3-under shooters that switched to ILF set-ups just so they can tune to it! Mine's being made.

I stand corrected.  Missed the reference to three under in the initial post.  Are you making a glass laminated or self-bow?  A lot of self-bow makers put the arrow shelf 2 inches above center, while most glass laminated builders put it closer to 1 1/4 inches above center.  The higher the shelf from center, the less you would want to stiffen the upper limb vis-a-vis the lower for three under shooting.

It's a glass lam bow and shelf is very low. I'm gonna see how it works like I said bc I shoot 3 under. If it turns out light enough I may try it with 2 under and just even tiller

stiffer upper limb is good isn't it? you pull the string above the center not on center like you see 99% of bows tillered with a stick square to the fulcrum. i've never understood why people tiller with a stick in the center of the bow and get the limbs bending evenly this way then shoot it by pulling the string a few inches above where the tiller stick was. doesn't make sense to me. i'm no bowyer though.
