3 split to 3 under - help
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:14:00 PM »
i tried shooting 3 under tonight, keeping anchor same, and loved the tight group at 20 yards.  tight.   BUT low of mark by about 6-8 inches.  Do i need to move the knock point or some other tuning change, or just let the program in my head recalibrate on its own over time??? Not likely to a make a switch until after the season unless its a quick fix.  THANKS for help!

When I switched to 3 under I started using the arrow as a reference/aiming point. Stick with it for a bit and see what happens. I bet your brain takes over and things start to click. Switching to 3 under and gap or spilt vision or whatever it is that people are calling the way that I shoot these days is the biggest thing to happen to my shooting in the past 12 years. I shot split finger pure instinctive for the first 9 years. I killed a few deer like that too. Over a 2 year period I shot every single day, EVERY DAY, rain or shine, sick or holiday whatever I shot every single day minimum 6 arrow most days way more, I really committed myself to becoming a traditional instinctive archer, and no matter how hard I worked I had days where at 20 yards that I didn't belong in the deer woods. I had days I couldn't miss too but my bad days were BAD!! My bad days are now more than good enough at honest hunting range. If I was you I'd stick it out for a bit and see what happens

i shoot well instinctively but i think the release might be cleaner 3 under.  my groups looked better, but lower….if i can move the nock to fix it, i will.

Try bare shaft tuning, it will show you where your nock needs to be. Once you find your nock setting, use a bottom nock to keep your arrow from sliding down the string.

If your grouping well and getting good arrow flight then don't change the nock point.  Your brain will move the group where it needs to go.

If that doesn't work then you could build up the shelf/rest a little higher but then you will most likely have to raise the nock the same distance to maintain good arrow flight.

As stated above just keep shooting and you will come around in no time. I went through the same thing.

Changing to three under will require a higher nock pt. Anybody can get consistent groups if they are consistent...even if it is not quite right.

Three under will generally require a nock height of about 5/8" to 3/4" where as split is closer to 1/2".  This may or may not change your point of impact, but it will definitely improve arrow flight weather you can see it or not.

If you make the change, you will do your self a big favor by adding a second nock pt under the arrow too....trust me this will make a big difference.

You do what feels right for you, but if you don't adopt the idea and work it exclusively for at leas t 21 days, it will never feel more natural..and this goes for any change.

good luck, BIgJIm

I shot three under and switched to split.  Until I adjusted nock and anchor point split was always higher grouping than three under.

Well yes you will shoot lower as you moved the rear sight down.  It will take a bit to adjust but it will be fine.  Just don't switch back and forth as that will really confuse your head.

It was the same for me.  I shoot instinctive and eventually I began to compensate for it. I don't have any problems now.

If you switched from split to three under (AND DIDN'T CHANGE WHERE YOU ANCHOR) , you in effect raised the nock end of the arrow one finger width, say 1/2 to 3/4 inch, so yes, you will shoot lower because your arrow is pointing lower.

Raising your nock height will only contribute to this problem. The reason for raising/changing your nock height is to get good arrow flight, eliminate porpoising, for example, though it can affect arrow impact somewhat as well. So, if you decide to adjust the nock point, decide to do it for better arrow flight, not to change arrow impact.  If your arrows are flying good, just low, and your bow isn't too noisy for you, leave your nock point alone.

You either need to continue to shoot as is and let your brain adjust, or lower your anchor point so the arrow nock is in the same place vis-a-vis the side of your face as when you shot split. Good luck.

The problem with going back and forth, is that when shooting three under, sighting with the arrow gets convenient and then going back to split, it seems like the floor falls away from your perspective. Then the tendency to lose the feeling of your split finger aim and you can start to over think and second guess yourself. Long years ago, I shot three under with a short recurve for a couple of years. I liked how out to twenty yards how I could group a little better by gun barreling the arrow. I did notice that the bow felt a bit more harsh and that if I tried to increase my shot tempo my release got harder, perhaps pulling more with my ring finger, which had major effects on my arrow flight. I had lost the ability to make a quick controlled shot at pheasants and rabbits. In the end, I decided that I was back to the same timing and shooting situation problems that I had when I had sights on my recurves, which limited me to being able to only shoot at game that gave me all the time in the world to make a delicate shot and from the same shooting positions. I tried three under a couple of years back with another short recurve and had terrible arrow control problems, I had to be oh so careful to not lift the arrow off the shelf with my draw. I once missed my target, missed my garage, and luckily hit my house.  Some find it perfectly natural to go three under and can shoot that way in diverse situations, I, obviously am not one of those people, I always get into situations where I need to do something a bit different to get off a good shot.  If you are not ready to make a permanent switch, try visualizing your shots and everything familiar about your shot, before drawing the bow. I find that I must do this every so often when shooting to keep myself focused and consistent, otherwise I start to need to force myself back to form and aiming control halfway through the shot process, that never works for me.
