Serving size
« on: September 25, 2007, 08:28:00 AM »
Just got the Doing the Twist DVD and was trying to figure out out what serving size works with different type nocks. Sometimes I shoot carbons with bohning signatures and other times it's woodies with classic index nocks. What's your experience?

Hi Bowana: Im not an expert, but do twist my own. It depends on how many strands you lay. Use a serving that will give you a lightly snug fit to your nocks. Im sure some one with more knowledge will chime in. good luck with your bow strings.

.026 Halo serving on a 14 strand D-97 string works well for 11/32 and 5/16 Bohning classic nocks on woodies.

Umpteen different answers to that question.  One thing is for sure--you won't be able to use the same size serving (on the same string) and get a proper fit for both nocks.

If you don't want to buy more than one size of serving, get a small size (.018 or .019) and build up the nock point with dental floss.  If you use both arrows/nocks with the same bow, make two strings and serve one for one type, the other for the other type.

Another option (which I really don't care for) is to file out the Sig nocks so they fit the same as the index nocks.

Tough call.  I settled on one brand of knocks and use whatever serving diameter is necessary so that the nock snaps on but easily slids on the serving.

More questions: a variety of 11/32, 5/16, Easton X and G nocks all seem to have about the same fit and are from .10" to 7/64".  Bohning Classic nocks seem a little bit looser -- although they still snap on and stay on.  Nocks for 1/4" shafts are much smaller.

LBR, are you saying that Bohning Signature nocks are tighter than their Classic nocks?

Are there standards for nock sizes?

"LBR, are you saying that Bohning Signature nocks are tighter than their Classic nocks?"

Yep--at least they have a harder snap, which is what will affect your arrow flight/performance.

"Are there standards for nock sizes?"

I think there's 3 or so "standard" sizes, maybe more, and some brands change from time to time.

There's two different sizes of G nocks (large and small--couldn't quote the diameter), at least two fits for Easton uni-nocks (3-D and Super nock), Bohnning Classics, Bohnning Signiatures, Mercury, Nirk, Z, H, X.......heck, I can't keep up with all of them!  I keep a box of assorted nocks on hand so I can fit the serving to the nock on a particular string, but sometimes I have to ask the customer to send me one of theirs when I'm not sure or don't have one on hand.  Some folks like a tight fit, some like it loose.......erring to the small side and building it up with a couple of wraps of dental floss is what I'd do.
