Question about bowbuilding tools
« on: September 25, 2007, 08:37:00 AM »
I've been on here as a lurker for some time, but don't recall if I've ever posted.
Well, I thought I would jump in with a question.
I've finally decided that I can't go on without trying my hand at making my own bow.
My question is in relation to tools.
I've got plenty of files and rasps and even a spokeshave.
While I don't have a band saw, I do have a table-top  scroll saw that should work on some outlining.

I know that I need a good scraper...any recommendations?
Besides that, what else is essential.
BTW, just got a copy of The Traditional Bowyers Bible in the mail yesterday, but haven't had much time to dig in, although I've been absorbing lots of info from this and other sites.

Thanks,

Sorry,
But I just realized that this post probably should have gone into the PowWow section.

Draw knife, some clamps.....a vise or some other way to hold the stave you are working.
You will need a tillering tree or stick. Tillering string...the beauty of it is that you should be able to make much of what you need. Check the how to section, specifically the ferrets page, and George's too.
I would think anything else that I havent mentioned and/or forgot should be covered rather well in the bowyers bible.
Have fun and good luck.

Eric recommends one side of a pair of scissors for a cheap scraper.
