Elk Ivories on a Bow?
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:36:00 AM »
Just curious if anyone has ever used or seen elk ivories on a bow?  I've got a bunch just sitting in a drawer and thought it might be cool to use one or maybe a couple on my next bow but not sure how.  Maybe for tip overlays (not sure they would even work for that)? or maybe inserted into the riser similar to a medallion?    Just looking for ideas or maybe advise from any bowyers out there.

I inlaid a half of an ivory into a knife sheath.  Could to the same with other leather goods and bow risers, I think.  Probably not large enough for tip overlays.  Of course, people also have them made into rings, cuff links and necklaces and other jewelry.

Scrimshaw a compass in it and have Dave inlay it.

Why not. Works on a knife.

I'll try to find pics, but I've done 2. One was inlaid in the riser of a longbow I built. Looked sharp.

I have done several sets in antler burr limb bolts. They look really great.
God bless, Steve

I was thinking they could work great as a thumb rest.

I used one as an arrow rest on a bow I made for my daughter.

Just slipped it under the leather grip with a little contact cement on the back

I inlaid one for the arrow shelf on a selfbow once.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I had Jack install an Ivory into the riser of my Kwyk-Styk when I had it made . The tooth    came from my first longbow killed bull.It complements his standard arrowhead nicely.
Enjoy
