Kentucky Elk Tag
« on: August 28, 2014, 02:41:00 PM »
I'm new here. I've drawn a cow elk archery tag for the south at large area in Kentucky. I'm planning on a DIY hunt. My dad will be helping me. I would appreciate any advice you all would be willing to share with me.

About me: I'm 34 and have been hunting whitetails in Kentucky since I was 16 with good success. I grew up shooting traditional with my dad, but stopped until a year ago because I got busy with sports and then school. I've been shooting consistently for the past year or so and am comfortable to 25 yards.

I'll be using my Bob Lee Signature take down (70# @ 28, I draw 29.5). I shoot gold tip traditional 7595 with a total arrow weight of 705 grains. I shoot the bow well.

I'll be scouting this weekend and several more before the season starts on 10/19. I've enjoyed reading here and look forward to contributing.

From one Kentuckian to another... GO BIG BLUE ! Good luck... My wife's family is from Hazard. I'll be in hazard the first weekend of October. I'll ask her family if they've heard any talk about where to be...     Tradcat                                                     By the way... Trad is for traditional bow hunting & Cat is for UK !

South at Large. It was my second choice. I wanted the Short Creek LEA.

I hunted hazard LEA last year. I don't know much about the south at large but I'd be happy to help any way that I can. I'm just North of you in Scott County.

    :clapper:

I keep putting in every year!  Congratulations!

I figure if I was lucky enough to draw a Maine Moose tag on my 4th try, I might just (luck out) draw a Kentucky elk tag!

Congrats on drawing your tag. If you haven't touched base Fish & Game I recommend you do so. Management is proud of the work they have done with the Elk herd. They are usually helpful if you can find someone with the time to talk to you.

I recommend writing any questions down before getting ahold of someone. You do have an advantage living in Lexington. If at all possible a face to face meeting will be best. Even if it means a drive to Frankfort.

Be persistent and you should find someone in wildlife that can be a great help. Follow up with a little scouting and you have the makings of a great hunt.

Good luck.

Puddle Jumper,

I've called Fish and Wildlife and ended up leaving a message that wasn't returned. I'll take your advice and stop by in person the next time I'm in Frankfort for court.

I'm taking my daughter (almost 7, she came with me deer hunting last year) with me tomorrow to Fortner-Davis WMA in Bell County. It abuts the Corrigan WMA which is closed to elk hunting this year for reintroduction efforts. I'll have a decent camera with me and try to get some pictures to share later this weekend.

Thanks for the advice.

Do you shoot with KTBA? If so, we may have met in person at some point. Thanks for the welcome.

I sent you a PM about contacting a KDFWR biologist.

Good luck.
