Arrow help
« on: August 31, 2014, 06:40:00 AM »
I need some advice, other than the old graphlex shafts back in the early 80's I have no experience with carbon shafts. I shoot a 58" recurve, shelf cut to center, 45# at 28" with a B55 Flemish twist sting. My draw length is 28.
Stu's calculator says a GT3555 trad 30" with a 145 grain point should be just about right, but other spine charts say it is too light. That seems unlikely to me. If anything I think this arrow would be a little stiff. What do you guys think? I only hunt small game and whitetails from the ground, so I am not all that concerned about EFOC. I prefer a 2 blade head.

That is going to be stiff for sure.

I would suggest a 1535 or similar shaft of .600 spine. I like the 145g pt (on a 1535 that should give you about a 400g arrow +- with 30" shaft).

That is 9gpp and a pretty good set up...only guessing, but arrow length of 29"s would be close (best to cut to tune). If you want a little more weight, opt for a 50g aluminum insert. This would give you another 39g as you would have to subtract the 11 g standard insert figured first.

That should be a winning combination.
You can make the 3555 work, but will have to leave it much longer and put considerably more weight up front.

Here is another thought....Don't know, but if you are considering GT blems, the 1535's blems are available and are so much, much more often than the 3555 trad blems and since it is the more likely choice for your set up...
Good Luck,
BigJim

Thanks, Big Jim- I was already thinking about ordering from you. I try to give my business to the sponsors here, especially one in Georgia.

I shoot a 48 lbs @ 29" traditional recurve and I use GT traditionals 1535 blems from Big Jim. 8 strands string from SBD. Standard GT nock and inserts, 100 grains fieldtip and 5 inch helical fletching. Hand painted cresting adds another 15 grains to the back. Shafts are full length, which is 30.5" inch for this shaft ( back of point - valley of nock). I put one weedeater line in, which gives me a total arrow weight of 440 grains. The shafts are very very tuff, so they last very long.
I shot for more then halve a year  intensively with this setup, and they fly just about perfect. Even targets at 60 yards aren't a big issue.
Let Big Jim glue your inserts in, they hold forever!

Hope this helps,
Ad
