Stumpshooting glue-on points - advice needed
«

Hey gang,
I got to go stumpshooting yesterday, for the first time in years. It was so much fun and such great training for hunting season to boot.
Now I need to convert a couple of arrows for the purpose. I use 5/16" cedar shafts. What kind of points are best for stumping?

Judos or blunts.

I shoot footed carbons with screw in Ace Blunts for stumping. I've never gotten one stuck, even in a solid tree. I see they're made in glue-on also.

I'll second the Ace.
Excellent stumping and small game head. The design limits penetration and helps make them easy to find and pull. They are also available in weights to match most broadheads.

The hex head is a great stumping point, if you are actually going to shoot stumps with them, glue them on tight. I use either Stanley amber melt on or epoxy.

Jan,
This isn't a glue-on but I think they make them. A hex head with a scorpio(similar to a judo) mounted behind it on a carbon. As you can see they take a beating.
Good Shooting,
Craig

Judos, my favorite by far (they make 'em in 5/16" glue ons). You do need to dig 'em out of the stumps and trees sometimes ( a sturdy knife, & wood chisel or sharpened flat blade screwdriver are always carried).
Next, I'd use Ace hex blunts. They shoot great, but will bury easier in weeds. I find they break shafts more easily than Judos on hard stumps. They do pull out of stumps pretty easily, as the hex head is a bit larger than the ferrule and shaft.

I've used the Ace Hex blunts for a long time. One thing though, I started pinning the points instead of just gluing them on, I'd lost a few from impact shock knocking them off, and since they're not the cheapest thing going, it seem prudent to pin them on.

Regular old steel blunts work great and are cheap.

5/16 glue on Judo points or slip a Scorpio behind a field point or blunt. Another point I use is the Tiger Claw, believe they are now called "Barta Points".

I have both judos and the rubber blunts for my wooden arrows. Judos are better in terms of almost always being found lying on top of the grass. However, for low poundage bows I prefer the 70 gr rubber blunts. The arrow flies better...They are also considereably cheaper and I guess that when hitting something hard, are less likely to damage the shaft.
Also, they match the weight of the 70 grn piles I use for targets and, if you want to do broadheads, they are very close to the two blade 80gr boradhead from bearpaw..
Cheers
Alex
