How many twists
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:32:00 AM »
just put a new flemish string on one of my recurves(first flemish ive used) and seems awfully long. Bow is a 62 inch so I got a 58 string. I.d like to get another 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch in the brace height. Any problems twisting it down that much or should I get a shorter string? Thanks.

next time ya order...order the string by the string length you need, not the bow length...it'll keep ya from twisting your strings up so tight they start kinking.

Dave, I don't mean to butt in here, but Dan is giving good advice.  The old "rule of thumb" has bee 4" shorter than a recurve for as long as I can remember, BUT it won't apply to every bow.  AMO specs are 3" shorter, longbow or recurve, but (obviously) a lot of bows don't go by that either.  I've seen string lengths vary (on recurve bows) from 2.5" shorter than the AMO to 6" shorter;  on longbows from 1.5" shorter to 4" shorter.

String makers can vary also--one may send you a string that's 58" after it's had 300# of tension applied;  another only puts 100# on it, and another may not pre-stretch at all--that's going to make a big difference once you get the string shot in.

Measureing the string isn't a fool-proof guarantee, but in my experience it's the best way to get the right length the first time.

The 4 inch thing is just a guide, not a rule. My 60 inch Kota takes a 57 inch string. I have to twist it up as the string stretches, but the "standard" 56" string was way too short.

I measured 3 3-Rivers 60" strings at my local shop for a WARF bow.  Only ONE was 60".  One was 59, and the last was 61 1/4".

These are the EXACT strings that 3-Rivers sell, as this shop is a local distributor, and they are still in the 3R packaging.

I was, needless to say, highly disappointed...

So you gotta measure...and it you twist it up too much, it just won't settle in to a consistent brace.  Found that out the hard way.

And play nice with Dan...the air's thin up there.

Thanks Marc  :D .

Guess I'm not to suprised on the string lengths being different.  If you're gonna buym, Chads the man! But it aint all that hard to buildem either.   Then again I've had my fair share of grief trying to perfect things.   ;)
