Antelope over waterhole
«
on:
September 30, 2014, 08:52:00 PM »
A friend wants me to ask if anyone can recommend a good antelope hunt sitting at a waterhole.
I guess I have always wanted to try it too.
Who should we call?
Are there any places where we would not have to enter a draw lottery?

Oglala National Grasslands in N/W Nebraska. OTC permits and lots of land to hunt. Been considering a speed goat hunt myself, Irv.

Never been there, but I've done some initial research, i.e. spoke to game dept, Internet searches and ordered maps. From what Ive found, there are quite a few antelope in this area. If you want the highest populations, Wyoming is your best bet.

If you want guided there are plenty that can do that for you Irv. I haven't done guided myself, so don't have a suggestion for you. But antelope are pretty easy to do on your own unguided as well. As mentioned, Wyoming has the biggest populations. Look for units with good amounts of public land and high tag numbers for easy draw. I'm not sure if any units there are truly over the counter, but there are good ones that have leftover buck tags.

Guided in Wyoming is a good hunt...if the weather stays hot and dry. I've had customers who bowhunted with Spearhead Ranch and Table Mtn Outfitters in Wyoming. All were successful and had a great time.

Many thanks fellas.
I could do either the public DIY or the guided.
I'll see what my friend, Steve had in mind.
If anyone else has ideas, keep them coming.
Dennis, I'll call you about the Nebraska hunt info.
Thanks again.

Everything is tuffer than it used to be. If there are left over antelope tags in a area it is because it is mostly or all private and access can be difficult or costly. As was said do your homework look for an area with lots of yellow (BLM) and good numbers of tags for chance to draw. These days you may need a few preference points to get drawn in WY. Only archery antelope hunters hope and pray that it doesn't rain. This past season the only dry spot around me was in my blind. Makes hunting water hole next to impossible.

Irv,
I know an archery only guide in Northern Colorado/Wyoming. I hunted with him one time and saw lots of nice goats, he had a lease on a huge buffalo ranch and they could only bowhunt.
I'll give you his info. when you bring my Thunderchild back!.....HaHa! I see you bought one on the classifieds.

Hey Kevin,
I'll probably be in the Monroe area tomorrow or Friday.
Thanks for letting me shoot your TC.
They are nice bows and it is nice to have the Takedown feature like you said.
Do you have an interest in Antelope?

I've hunted with Spearhead Ranch out of Douglas, WY twice. No trouble getting a tag and plenty of animals. I could almost guarantee you a nice animal unless you want to hold out for an exceptional trophy. The Moore family is top notch.

Montana has a lot of land opened to the public through the Block Management System for a DIY hunt. You can either hunt over waterholes or spot and stalk with decoys. The best part is that we rarely see any other hunters.
