Good Thread brings up a question
« on: October 02, 2014, 01:15:00 PM »
THE most critical time of hunting was a good read and brought up a good question for me. For those who hunt from the trees and shoot sitting down, I am wondering what kind of stand is used and how.
What I mean is that, I have a really nice climber but it would be real hard to shoot a longbow or recurve out of. My wife who recently joined me, has the same issue for sure. I sit that seat as close to the base as I can and still, I couldn't clear the string around that stand unless the shot was maybe 20 yards out, from an elevation of 12 feet or so.

anyone wanna offer some advise or tips or climber options that would make this easier?. Canting the bow more isn't a good option here

I use Lone Wolf hang ons and a LW hand climber, and a few ladder stands. The only stands I've ever had trouble with are ladder stands on shots that are directly behind the tree I'm in. Most have rails near the knees that keep one from turning completely around in them.

On the other stands I can twist my body nearly completely around.  Of course, sometimes I'm forced to stand to shoot directly behind the tree.

I always try to set up so the most likely position the critter will come from/where I'm most likely to get the shot, is my left side or in front of me (I'm a right hand shooter).  Of course, sometimes I have to lean out a little for the shot, or change my can't a little.  I have no problem with lower bow limb clearance regardless of the angle. I use a 64-inch 3-piece hybrid longbow.

Lonewolf, aerohunter.... have no problem shooting while sitting but I practice it.  That being said, I prefer to stand most of the time and the vast majority of my shots are while standing.  Sitting limits me to shots to my left for the most part.  Standing I can shoot about 270 degrees.
Everything has a price - the more we accept, the more the cost

Thunderhorn takedown longbow 55# @ 27

I use a Summit Open Shot climber and Lone Wolf and Muddy lock-ons. With the climbers the best piece of advice I have is to have the seat portion of the stand as high as you can. You will actually have more room to clear a lower limb and string than if you have the seat dropped low. When I stand up, the seat hits me about mid thigh. It always helps to have the stand angled so that your best/most likely shot would be about 45 degrees to the left (if you are right handed).

Yeah, I should have said that the top portion of the climber, I have set as low as possible and the seat is pretty much where it is, since it is nonadjustable. I will have to take a look at that summit that you mentioned.
Edit...
The wife has that stand (the predecessor) and cant use it due to a bad shoulder. She has to have a sit and climb unfortunately.

I  stand and lean on my safety harness so that way I have stability and clearance for my bow.

You want the frame of the top portion of the climber set high not low. Raise the whole thing up and you should see a difference. My feet barely touch the stand when I am sitting but it makes shooting different directions much easier.

I would look into a stand that has a level bar all the way around the upper portion of the stand. Then you can comfortably lean out on the rail to shoot which would help to clear the bottom limb also. Something like the Summit Viper should work out good.

I guess I am not understanding that. If the bar is in the way 2' below my waist, how is it not in the way at my waist?.
O.K.... Well I will set my seat high next time out and just do it and see what you are saying first hand. I am sure you know what you are talking about  :D

Thanks
