SCA Youth Archery
« on: September 28, 2007, 01:52:00 AM »
For the last few years I have been an active member of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), mostly taking part in archery and the various other arts related to archery. This past weekend I was at an event in Columbus Ohio, and while I was at the range, I noticed something that saddened me. There was a line of small children, 5-9 yrs old, all wanting to give archery a shot. Unfortunately the only thing available there for the youths to shoot, was about a 29" long fiberglass bow and 2 "safety glass" arrows. I never really realized how badly my local group is hurting for youth equipment, and have decided to fletch up 3 dozen youth arrows to donate to them. If anyone might have some old/used youth archery gear that isn't being used, please let me know and I will gladly take it off of your hands. I only have a small amount of money available at this time, but I am more than willing to part with it for this. Thanks You!

hey sorry Ive been off TradGang a while and just seen this post.  there are a few of us on here that are SCA.  believe it or not its hard sometimes to find those bows.   keep eye out at yardsales and such.   talk to your group's Marshal to see if they would buy a few bows for kids.

Hi ya Allen, i to shoot in the SCA archery competitions and i believe that the problem with kids equipment is a pretty normal thing.

My wife and I take three of those red fiberglass bows to every shoot we go to so kids can get a chance to shoot.

I remember reading a thread about making kids bows out of rattan on here. I will look and see if i can find it. Maybe someone who knows better about this will chime in.

For our winter shooting we use an indoor range that charges us three dollars.  We collect in a group and most pay a dollar or two extra.  That money goes for bows arrows and accessories.  It is amazing how much money you can collect at a dollar or two a week among archers
