Deer that bed anywhere and feed and bed in the same areas.
« on: October 12, 2014, 11:06:00 AM »
To Gene Wensel and others. I was reading through Come November again and on page 55 he talks about deer bedding anywhere and feeding and bedding in the same spots. Have you guys ever ran into this situations? How did you go about hunting these deer?
I have a situation like this and they randomly bed, feed all around them. You don't see they typical bed here travel over here to feed and back again stuff. And we also have a heavy acorn crop this year. Any advice? Ideas?

I have just been hugging very close to where I think they may be bedding and being as quiet as I can and hunting it. But there is feed all over.

Im in a 300 acre camp in sw MS. It's basically a 300 acre bedding area so we usually concentrate on food early and then funnel areas when the deer start moving more pre rut. Post rut I try to find a acorn tree or a bean tree in a thick area if it shows some feeding sign.

I'm seeing that right now due to 1200 acres of standing corn. A good percentage of the deer just stay in the corn. Why leave? Cover, lots of puddles and wet spots, plenty of food....but I am hunting the corners, which are thankfully all mature oaks dripping with acorns. Right now, pre rut, this secondary food source is getting quite a bit of activity. Even deer crave a change of pace in their diet.

I would say find the "edges" of your spot. And an edge with a food source should draw at least SOME activity. Good luck!

That what I been doing hunting in the thick areas or along them that has mast on the ground. Or open type pocket that's less than 50 yards in size.  Well I guess I am doing what I should. Just need to keep with it then. Thanks guys

As the food sources dry up and become more concentrated....and rut activity increases....it will all change.

I am amazed deer move at all this time of year, there is food everywhere.

Welcome to my world.     :banghead:

I just try to remember that a bad day of hunting beats any day in front of a computer screen.     ;)
