Cari Bow Tuktu vs Black Widow PSA
« on: October 13, 2014, 07:16:00 PM »
I've been eyeing a Tuktu, but have never seen one in person. Can anyone compare it to a Black Widow, so maybe I can quit thinking about it?

The Tuktu was passed around and several tradgangs wrote very thorough reviews on it and some uploaded videos of it as well.  Just do a search and you'll find the thread.  Not sure it that will provide the comparison with the widow but it's a lot of good info on the Tultu

The Tuk' is a beautiful bow and a shooter, great grip that really fills your hand.  Very quiet for a recurve and hits hard.  Where I can't really comment well is the PSA, since I haven't shot one, but from what I can infer the PSA is going to have a higher mass weight compared to the Tuktu due to the slightly larger proportions, use of glass riser reinforcements, and takedown hardware.  Also along with the mass, the more forward handle will likely make it a bit more forgiving, though the Tuktu is quite easy to shoot as it borders on being a forward type handle itself.  The Tuk' could be made more equal if you opted for a heavier riser wood like ebony or cocobolo.  I do like that the Tuktu is available in a 2pc...if/when I own another one it will be a 2pc.  One nice thing about the Tuktu is it is extremely short when strung...the 60" model is only 55" when strung tip to tip.

I shot the pass-around bow. I am a lefty, but shot the right-handed bow. wrote a review on it too. it is a fantastic bow. two different animals, in my opinion. I have not shot the Black Widow, but the difference in mass weight in the riser is obvious. the Tuktu has a much slimmer handle, static limbs, and is a quiet, hard-hitting killer. second only to my RER
Retro.

not dogging the BW in any way. it's just a different type of bow. heavier riser, beefier grip. they are and always have been quality bows.

you're in a tough spot, brother.

Lol, I know it. I like my Widow, but I'm getting a new bow itch that just might be scratched after season.

I've read several of the Tuktu threads...that's what has me wanting one.

Does anyone know what the mass weight and riser cut of the Tuktu are?

I have a Tuktu EX (the static tip design - note that the Tuktu can come with regular or static tip limbs) and also own a BW SA II (3-piece) and a BW PAX.  These bows range from 47# to 50# @28".  All bows are 62" in length and I draw close to 31".  The Tuktu  is certainly lighter in mass, has an older style recurve look to it, has a fuller grip that is just about perfect, is shorter when strung, and is quieter than my BW bows.  My sense is that it may fling an arrow faster than my BW bows (although have never verified this with a chrono). Also, I consider the bows that Abe makes to more of a custom bow if that matters.  The BW bows have a more solid mass to them, feel good in the hand, seem less sensitive to arrow spine, and I tend to shoot them a bit better.  (but have spent more time shooting my BW bows).  Both bows draw out smoothly to my 31" draw.  Workmanship and customer service by both companies is excellent.   I think if you where a long bow shooter wanting to try a recurve then the Tuktu would be a great bow  as it feels very similar in the hand as my Cari-bow Peregrine.  They essentially have the same grip.  Also, with the static tips you need to be more careful when stringing it but really not a big deal.  I enjoy shooting both my BW and Cari-bows.  Can't say that I prefer one over the other and expect to hold onto them all for sometime.  Not sure if I have made your decision any easier...you really can't go wrong in buying your bow from either of these bowyers.

Best to email Abe to have the facts straight.  He's pretty good about replying in a timely manner.

I've never shot a bw but did have the chance to test out the pass around tuktu.  Following my time with her I sent Abe a deposit for a custom build (featherhorn model, not converted to a recurve shooter quite yet).  The grip is amazing!  Naturally pointing and just a pure joy to shoot.

I see Abe has added a few bows to his stock inventory page if you aren't willing to wait for the custom build.
But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourself - James 1:22
