While hunting I got caught not paying attention…again… and watched a group of does & yearlings. I've watched them several times this season, one of us was always just in the wrong spot.
When they came in a few days ago and I was caught unaware they eventually were spooked by a coyote. But one of the young yearlings took it upon itself (I think himself) to chase the yote away.
The next night I sat where they were crossing the 40acre hay field in the evening, only to be outsmarted again. The does, minus a yearling, came from a different direction behind me. About the same time I noticed a yearling headed to my feeder where I had been the day before. Nuts!!!
It's sunset & I originally planned to let the youngster eat. But I also can't leave the field without spooking him. I decide to make a play on it.
So across the open field I go.
Wearing my ghillie, I simply walk upright straight at him/it. Not even half way across I notice he's watching me. Nevertheless I trudge on, slowly making my way across. About 200yds into the approx. 400yd endeavor the youngster starts my way!
I stop, he stops. I walk, he walks. Eventually his curiosity gets the better of him and he starts sprinting at me! I slowly take a knee, with the sun behind me. Finally he stops 30yds out facing straight on, out of my comfort zone. We stare each other down and finally he decides to leave, leaving me once again, empty handed.
Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.
