« on: October 23, 2014, 09:21:00 AM »
taking the bear alaskan recurve and heading out Oct 30th for 10 days of bowhunting while visiting family in Windom Minn.
just wondering if any has any words of wisdom for me, rut , weather ETC.
windom is in the lower south west corner of the state. only been there once but that was summer time.

Our state wide gun season opens on Nov. 8th so the orange "army" will be out in full force. You will need to wear at the least an orange vest and hat to hunt. The rut should be going pretty good possibly with some lock down around that time. Alot of chasing goes on here in MN last week of Oct. and first week of Nov. It is definately an exciting time of year to be in the woods. Are you looking for public land in that area? Shoot straight and good luck!!
The weather is tricky this time of year with Temps being from 20'S to 70's. The crops are coming out of the fields in that part of the state right now which is good for hunting. The deer will be forced out of the standing corn into CRP, drainage ditches and smaller woodlots typical in that part of the state.

apparently my brother in law knows a few farmers who will be harvesting corn and plan on leaving some standing.
most likely be hunting on the family land and a few neighbors, probably no public land.
 is the hunter orange mandatory.
i plan on stopping at the footed shaft store in rochester while i'm out there too.

Yes hunter orange is mandatory during our statewide gun season. The rule is 50% of your upper body and head must be blaze orange. So a vest and a hat would be the minimum required during those times. The gun season can actually be a benefit to you if you are on private land. Once the guns start banging and the people start pushing, the deer have to go somewhere to escape.

Heck I'll thrown in a stop to see Jack Zwickey as well which is starting to get u close to my old stomping grounds.  He's up there in age and welcomes visitors!   He's off 36 in east maplewood, easy to get to but a bit in the wrong direction.  It's worth a extra couple hours!

I've been gone 20 years and finally hit the museum a couple years ago when I was back visiting family.   I wish I had made more time to see them in the past!    Spent some time talking with Fred Eichler while I was at the museum.  Cool dude!

I used to stop in and see Lamont as well.   And ended buy too much stuff lol.  I haven't been down that far in awhile now.

I've shot them as well for the last 25 years .    I grew up biking past his shop more than a few times.  Now when I'm home I stop in.  It's been a few years since I've been by for more than a few hour out stop on my way through.

I am on the ND side of the Red River north of Fargo, ND.  The deer in my area are very much into the pre-rut.  Bucks are starting to scrape and chasing does a bit.  I would think it will be getting full on by the end of the month.  Good luck.

Woodchucker I'll post up some pics if I have some success .
My first two trad kills were with the alaskan.
It was gifted to me back in the 90's when my father in law passed. Now his spirit lives on thru me.
Makes carrying that bow something very special

Kevin,

Have a  great trip. I am headed to the neighboring state, I hope you have a  great trip.

Some areas in MN have antler restrictions, just something you should ask about to be safe.

I hope you have good weather and good hunting.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

we should do a push towards each other. LOL
if i read my reg's right, minnesota is considered a CWD state and therefore i cannot bring back a whole, unprocessed deer carcass or un-taxidermied head.
