To camo or not to camo
« on: September 28, 2007, 11:30:00 PM »
For years I have bought into the idea that camoflage is a neccesary part of bowhunting I wore the latest patterns had every thing camo right down to my socks but recently I have been wondering if all that expense was really neccessary as all of my camo hunting clothes are wearing out and I needed new clothes I went down to Wal **** and the local hunting store and was totally awestruck at the cost of good camoflage hunting clothes so I decided to try a different angle. I went to our local military surplus store bought surplus wool pants (kind of a grey green color ) and a green wool shirt total price $27 and went hunting with no tree stand no blind just me and my bow and I just spent 3 hours surrounded by does and even had a little 2 point at 5yards these deer had no clue I was there despite my total lack of fancy hunting gear I even drew on the buck just to see if I could Has any one else tried this or was I just lucky tonight
Walk tall as the trees, live strong as the mountains,be gentle as the spring winds, keep the warmth of the summer sun in your heart and the Great Spirit will always be with you.

Folks were killing deer long before camo was sold.

I have used surplus wool pants even blue jeans, with earth tones plaid shirts or solid earth tones, for years. Out west that has worked great for me. As I like to still hunt or even ground blind hunt. I still get close to game.

Those gun hunters wear blaze orange and kill deer at close range too. As long as they don't wind you or see ya moving you can get very close with just about anything on. Camo is a must for turkeys though. Good luck

I have returned to the wools and plaids but do use the face and hand paint, use the wind and avoid movement.

There has to be over a hundred camo patterns in the market place. Maybe two or three are good for most hunting conditions. But do you "need" them? No Way!

As stated above. Break up your outline with cover. Play the wind. Move slow as a snail. HAVE FUN! We all know how to keep it simple. That's what Trad is all about. Well, for me anyway.

Good Hunting!

Its not necessary.  Use to wear it but have not in the last 10 years.  I Still kill deer with out it.   I think its over rated in my opinion and it has been marketed as a product that will improve your ability to harvest an animal which I feel is not necessarly true.  I see camo on everything now days.  Guns, bows, vehicles, even saw camo toliet paper.  This is over kill and turns me off. I think deep down inside people wear camo becasue they just like it rather than what advantages it might give them in harvesting an animal

Camo isn't a color or pattern, it's the use of light and shadow and knowing when to move/not move.

If you didn't want camo clothes, then why did you pick gray/green and not white?

Howard Hill used camo. Read "Hunting the Hard Way". He suggests plaids in earth tone colors. If that ain't camo, then I'll eat your Realtree socks.  ;)

I've had enough deer walk to within spitting distance of me when on stand wearing a full outfit of hunter orange!  Sumpin ain't right!

Legs in jeans look like logs and stumps.  Never mind the UV fraud many have fallen for.  The only thing I wouldn't wear in "compound" country would be tawny brown!

Shakes look into "combat glasses" they were developed for soldiers that had to wear glasses and the shine could get them killed.
The biggest part of going undetected by game is to stay upwind or across wind and to remain still as much as possible.I'd also say it is effective use of available cover. Good camouflage clothing, and by good I don't mean popular I mean effective, like ASAT or Predator or any ligher more open pattern that doesn't blob leasts you get away with a small amount of figiting. And ASAT 3D Pro Vanish suit or a ghillie shoot makes you look like nothing or at least nothing that is a threat.
I wasn't hunting, it wasn't the season; but I have stalked up to within bow range of deer and other critters wearing a red polo shirt and blue jeans. So even though I am pro good camo even I know it isn't absolutely nessasary.
It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare. ~Mark Twain
