Bow weight scale that would double as luggage scale?
« on: November 09, 2014, 08:50:00 AM »
It seems like my Bear bow weight is off so I am hoping to use a weight scale to check.  I remember seeing one somewhere online that was primarily a bow scale but also worked as a general weight scale to weigh packs etc.

I have a tree outside with a limb that will support me so this will be where I tie the scale to test bow.

Any feedback on a good scale?

Thank you

Digital scale.  Reasonably cheap and accurate.

Digital luggage scale; under $15 at Bed Bath & Beyond and other places that sell luggage like Walmart.  Just make sure it goes beyond the poundage marked on your bow -- some only have a 50# max measure.

While we're on this topic, I've got to ask because since I switched to ILF I've come to realize a bow scale would be very handy to track bow weight/tiller adjustments.  If such a dual purpose device exists, is it "beefy" enough to handle the task involved? What I mean is that when checking luggage I'm envisioning simply picking a suitcase off the ground a few inches.  If something failed, the results aren't likely to be catastrophic. When measuring a bow you're likely to have a marked arrow on it to determine the draw length. My  buddy at the archery shop says nothing terrifies him more than checking the draw weight on traditional bows.  When I helped him check mine I understood why. Even with heavy compounds you can pull/push straight down and use body weight to get to let-off, after that you're holding nothing. With trad there is none and even with lighter bows you invariably end up pulling out and away from the anchor with an arrow pointing in your vicinity.  His scale would hold a cow, but it's still intimidating. I wouldn't want to do it with junk. Is there a safer way?  I hand held model that you hold in your draw hand like a release aid would be nice.

I hang my scale from a solid hook in the joists in my basement. When I test my bow, I zero the scale and then pull straight down; not toward me. I can't imagine setting up a bow scale so your drawing the bow with the arrow pointing toward you.

After re-reading your post, I realized you are probably talking about the same setup I described, but if you pull less than perfectly straight down, the arrow may slip off the shelf and be flopping loose?

I normally put my thumb over the arrow to make sure that doesn't happen and am careful to make sure my thumb is not rubbing on the shaft to influence the weight reading.

Sorry if my post implied you were doing something weird. I guess I'm forgetting how to read in my old age.
