Playin' around with an old Shakespeare recurve. I need to go with a heavier spine. The only shafts I have to work with are ash. Would like to go with cedar but am wondering if the difference in weight might affect the spine I would need. What do you think?

Spine is a function of bending under a given weight (2# for wood) and a given support distance (26" for wood).  It has little to nothing to do with overall shaft weight.  Get the spine you need for your situation and press on.

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

Nothing is ever lost by courtesy. It is the cheapest of pleasures, costs nothing, and conveys much.

My experience is when shooting hardwoods, I always had to go up 5-10# in spine vs. POC, spruce, etc.  I don't know if it was the physical weight, if they don't recover as fast, or what, but that was always the case when I shot maple or ash.  Went back to POC.

I agree, when I shot Ash and Maple shafts I had to use a heavier spine then cedar or D Fir.
Everything has a price - the more we accept, the more the cost

Thanks for the replies. I ordered heavier cedar shafts so I'll post how they shoot. I think I would rather have them too stiff.
