Re-dye feathers?
« on: December 08, 2014, 10:01:00 PM »
I have some blue feathers that I hoped would be Navy blue when I ordered them. They are actually closer to turquois as it turns out. Can I somehow re-dye them to get Navy blue? Is three a special process or can I just heat up some blue RIT dye and dunk them?

Will be interested to hear what everyone has to say.... I got paranoid of hunting my white feathers, so I hit them with a Sharpie.... So far I can't really complain.
Still have some left, and that doesn't sound like too bad an idea.

Never tried to dye feathers that were already dyed.  Veniards (fly tying supplier) makes a dark blue dye for feathers. You might try that and let us know how it turns out.

Where did you get them?

I may want to buy some turquois colored feathers.

Ive never tried to dye, dyed feathers, If you do, I would try only one and see how it turns out.

If it were me though, I would probably do the whole bunch and figure out how to use whatever I came up with.

1. Wash feathers in water with about 2 drops of Dawn dish soap.

2. Heat Dye and then  add a bit of vinegar

3. Dunk feathers in dye, the longer they sit, the darker they will come out.

4.Rinse, Dry and Enjoy.

Here are better instructions I have used.

Let us know how it turns out because I am curious now.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll use the instructions in the link Cyclic provided and report back when I do it. )Probably this weekend). Neuse, can't remember where they came from, sorry. After taking them out in the sunlight, they look more royal blue than anything I think. I still will try to dye them Navy.

I have bought white full lengths and died the last few inches (after chopping) with several things, pink coolade, rit, and meganta inkjet ink.
the neon food coloring however seemed to work the best.

Also I forgot to mention but you probably can only dye darker than you have, If you have to go lighter, you would have to bleach and dye, it would be far easier to just buy something different. Plus I heard bleaching can weaken the feather.
