Centaur battle axe...who's using them?
« on: December 10, 2014, 06:58:00 PM »
You guys that use them, do you like them?  I have a Florida hog hunt coming up in a couple weeks.  I have some battle axes on the way, single bevel.  They should be here by weeks end.  Guys that have actually killed big game with them, how do you like them?  Would I be better off shooting my standby interceptors.  I like the idea of such a big, wide single bevel.

Thanks in advance fellas,

Jake

I haven't used the battle axe, but shot a doe a couple weeks ago with the Big Game Broadhead, single bevel.  The shot was through the lungs, the doe trotted off about 30 yards, stopped for a couple seconds and fell over dead.  The head cut off a rib on entrance, and went between two at an angle on the exit, cutting about 1/2 into both of them, stuck in the ground on the far side.  Couldn't ask for better performance.

I did shoot a buck that dressed 195, through the shoulder blade and into the spine with a Simmons Tree Shark, which is basically the same head as the Battleaxe, and it worked fine - busting right through the shoulder blade - but them I'm shooting a 67#@29" bow with a 710gr arrow.  I would suspect the wide head would limit penetration on bone with a light arrow or bow.  I think they would be an absolute incredible head on turkeys.

By the way, I found them to fly great, a little difficult to sharpen - I use a 1/2 round file and a round ceramic stick.

Dan,
Thanks for the input.  Did you find them harder to sharpen than a tree shark?  I've figured out getting simmons heads really sharp, but I have never messed with a single bevel head of any kind.  I haven't been too worried about being able to sharpen them, just curious mostly.

Tough to sharpen for me but it's all my dad shoots and he has taken three mature whitetail bucks with them all pass through, they are a thick tough head, I killed a turkey with one and they do work, with the right poundage and right edge I wouldn't hesitate to use them on anything, that being said I can't get the right edge on them (sharpening challenged) so I shoot abowyer boneheads. Best of luck to you!

Just got mine 2 weeks ago : Did not shot anything with them yet !!! Maybe this week end ....

I found them easy to sharp with a file .

Please for them having some experience with game , could you give us your set up and poundage at your draw . Thank you .

I shoot a longbow 62 pounds at my draw and 710 grains arrow .

I think they're a little easier to sharpen than the Simmons, not that the steel is different, just that I think single bevels are a little easier.  I've shot game with a variety of broadheads, probably close to 20 different types, and I'll be using the Big Game broadheads for a while.

I got my first single bevels ever this fall...they are Steel Force Phat Heads...I cannot imagine how any single bevel could be hard to sharpen...I just use a simple ceramic stick to touch up the edge

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

I have shot several turkeys, several deer and bear with them.  They make a crazy hole.  On the first deer I shot with them, I walked up and saw the hole and my jaw just dropped.

Having said that, I also shoot the big game head and use it on elk as they are much tougher than deer.

Having used both of Jim's head now and having killed several hogs...I would not use the BAxe on hogs.

I also now have a moose hunting coming up in the fall and when talking with Jim, I asked him if guys were using his BG head on moose.  He said absolutely and would use it himself.

BUT the funny part of the same conversation is Jim never expected  folks to hunt with the BAxen for anything but turkeys.

So TL:DR  I use BG Heads on tough stuff and B Axes on everything else.

One of Mr. Jim Neaves buddies had a complete pass thru on an elk.

Have not shot anything that large with them, however they have proven quite efficient in the field on smaller game.

The letahlity of your over-all set-up would be a significant factor in choosing your broadhead.

With that bow weight, I would use the Simmons on hogs.
