Snakeskin

Not so much a building technique, just what have you seen type of question...

I am wondering how far around guys can get away with wrapping a snakeskin? Take an old bear recurve for instance. It has a totally flat back to it. So it is very obvious that if you back it with snakeskin, the snakeskin would stop at the edge of the flat back of the limb. Like this:

 

But picture a longbow or selfbow with more of a round sweeping profile where there isn't such a demarcation line between the back of the limb and the side of the limb like this:

   

How far towards the belly can you take the snakeskin?

Wow, I didn't expect that. Sounds like it's not to critical. I was worried that if I went too far around the sides they would bulge or do something weird when drawn.

I was looking at these skins last night and realized something really weird I think. It looks like someone split the skin from the snake lengthwise on the backside. So my skins have the wide bottom scales in the middle.

Am I correct that is not how they commonly are?
