0000 steel wool works as a great scrubbing pad.  I've used both acetone and a citrus based gunk remover.

I've been taking most of the markings off with acetone and 0000 steel wool, but I like to leave the 1535 or 3555 markings on as that is the only quick way to tell one from the other. It sometimes gets a bit smeared, though.

Then I had this simple little thought; "Why not cover the spine rating with a little piece of masking tape while I scrub the rest off". Works like a charm. Guess I'm just getting a bit slow in my old age.
