Small Game Points For Wood Arrows?
« on: December 30, 2014, 03:32:00 PM »
I am shooting Douglas fir quite a bit this year and want to spend some time hunting Rabbits and Squirrels. I have some small game heads made up for carbon and aluminum arrows, but I wanted to see what everyone is using for woodies. Please show some pictures if you have them... Thanks!

I mostly use the Ace Hex glue on blunts for my woodies. Work great.

Ace Hex Blunts are great stumping and small game heads.  Rabbits aren't hard to kill, but squirrels are another thing.  I don't hunt them much, but all of those I know who hunt squirrels with a bow insist on some kid of cutting head.  A field point or blunt, slotted and fitted with a glued in piece of steel blade is most common.

VPA Small Game Thumpers

I haven't shot any rabbits with them yet, but if the damage they do to a stump is any indication they should work fine.

Not denying the effectiveness of the hex head, but I lose arrows a lot in pursuit of bunnies and pheasants, so I go cheap. The cheapest shafts that I can get to fly, minimal work on the arrows and 38 caliber casings with a big split shot hammered in. During deer/turkey/pheasant season when still hunting, I have old but still deadly shoot at anything broadhead arrows. Works for me.

I can't remember the name of these small game heads, but I believe I bought them from someone off of this site. I have some of the VPA heads too, but these aren't those. Anyone know what they're called? They work well.

I like Ace Hex Blunts for grouse--they worked great.  The VPA head looks like it would do a good jog also.

My experience with squirrels is they are really easy...to miss.  Jerry Pierce made a jig to make squirrel points--basically he cut field points and put a homemade blade in them.  Only one I've managed to connect on went down DRT (Dead Right There) with an Ace Hex Blunt, but it was a perfect double-lung.

I've heard lots of folks talk about killing rabbits with this or that, from rubber blunts to judos, etc.

Rabbits in my area must have cross-bred with squirrels, because they are TOUGH. For rabbits, I use a cheap broadhead.  After years of hunting them with a bow and trying all kinds of heads, broadheads are the most reliable...and sometimes we still have to track them a long way on a less than perfect hit.

I drill a hole across a field point while it is glued on then put a piece of matching size finishing nail through and then bend each side back a bit to keep it from falling out.  Does not need to be tight.

For the kids I grind a flat spot ont the point of their field tips then cut straight down the center with a hack saw about 3/8".  Then an old hack saw blade is cut into diamond shapes with a cold chisel, then two edges dressed in the grinder so the point is sharp and two edges are sharp.  Then glue them into the slotted field points with JB weld.

Never fear, you search is over for the perfect head. (Dramatics aside I love this)

I've been on the search for the perfect small game/stumping head for woodies. The last two days have been spent stumping and necessity breeds invention. I DID NOT come up with this alone, top hat makes a point called Charlie point and Fritz mentioned he did this.

Take your finished woodie, grind down the FP to the first taper, then drill Appropriate sized holes to accommodate .130 weed eater line. Insert two 1" pieces and viola.!!!!

These things DO NOT skip, snake under grass and do not change flight characteristics of arrow.

Also with the narrow point the absorb some of the impact and stick in a little without going in too far to harder stumps, this also prevents some breakages.

On some of my .38 cal blunts, I cut a slot and glued the bleeder blades from old Pearson broadheads that copied the Bear razor head. My supply of them is getting low.  I also use Hi Precision three blade heads, they made them here, and lots of people bought them for souvenirs when the plant closed down for virtually nothing, I get them for free, but they are crap and often out of balance with crooked welds.

Steve, you are correct! They come in 150 grains for the glue on head. They work very well on the squirrels.

Another head which kills squirrels efficiently is the G5 Small Game Head. I had great success with that head screwed to some Axis 500s. I wish they made a glue on style for wooden arrows.

Nutter...3/8" hex head nut threaded on the point taper. A always add a bit of super glue to the taper and at the nut. About as cheap as you can get but very effective.

I read where someone used keys.  Tried it.  Got a 2413 Aluminum shaft and cut into 2 in sections.  Then I sawed  down the wood shaft like I wwas mounting a a flint point.  Took the key and ground down the flat sides of the teeth until it was the thickness of the sawn slot.  Weighed the key and single edge ground down the edges until I got the weight needed.  Put the AL collar oin the shaft and slide it down while I smeared gorilla glue on the key, sawn slot while I pushed up the AL collar.  Trued it and let it dry. Cheap fun and real cheap small game heads. I have been using this on old boot top breaks so needed heavy points.  Make the weight about 160 instead of 125, shoot it and grind down the key until it flies true,  they thump!v
