What size string?
« on: January 03, 2015, 10:05:00 AM »
I came across a kids longbow with no markings that only needs a string. The bow has a slight reflex to it and measures 46.5" from bottom of the string grooves. The measurement was taken following the contour along the back of the bow. What string length should I use?

Flemish twist string so it is easy to twist up to raise brace height it necessary...string about 3 inches shorter to start with so 43.5 to 44 inches...maybe not ideal to shorten a string an inch by twisting but most kids bows do not require ultimate accuracy anyway...I have twisted up strings until they start to coil back on themselves and still had them work quite well

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Probably 43.5 if it was a recurve it would be an inch shorter. From there you can twist or untwist to get the exact length.

Most likely 43.5"-44".  If the draw weight is light enough, you can use twine for a makeshift string to check the length needed.

I agree with everyone on length! Also, like Chad suggests, use some other string material, paracord, braided masons twine, etc. or maybe an old string from your bows.

Just string up with bowyers, timberhitch knot and measure for new string!
