Installing inserts
« on: January 14, 2015, 11:00:00 AM »
I just ordered some carbon arrows and inserts, is there a product to use to install inserts so that I can remove them if I want to trim the arrow? I believe the glue that is recommended basically makes a permanent bond.

If the glue is epoxy, it is almost permanent but will come out with enough heat.

However, I use hot melt glue for inserting inserts.

During the tuning stage, some folks use just a dab of the glue, just enough to keep the inserts in place.

Others wrap the insert in a little Glad wrap or Saran wrap, which also apparently holds the inserts in place, but still enables their extraction fairly easily.  Don't know.  Never tried that.

Best heat and remove glue I've used.

I use the Blue hot melt it is a low temp hot melt and allows you to heat the field point or broad head and remove the insert without getting the carbon shaft to hot but still holds relatively well.

Here in Texas you want to use the high temp hot glue like in TJs link.  With the hot temps and hard targets the friction will soften the low temp stuff and you loose the insert and points.

Quick Stik hot melt from Big Jim's Bow Co! Since I have been using this glue, I have not lost a single insert, and they come out easily any time I do want them out.

P.S. - Looks like it is the same product TJ was recommending above, just from a different sponsor!

What Bisch said. Just started the Big Jim's glue this summer and is really good. Good luck.

I use regular Bohning ferriltite hot glue. I heat the glue and apply to the insert. Then I heat the insert to get the glue liquid again and push the insert into the shaft.

To remove a glue-in-glue-on insert I simply heat the insert. To remove a standard insert I screw in a field point and apply heat to the field point.

I use an alcohol burner to avoid the overheating that is common with a propane torch. All of the big traditional archery supply houses like 3R carry these burners.

The above method works well.

Krex:  Of course if your shafts aren't tapered, you can just remove the nock to shorten them.

When removing inserts from carbon shafts that have been installed with hot melt glue, it's a lot safer to have a field point screwed into the insert and apply the heat to the field point rather than the carbon shaft itself. If you use a torch this works very well...  you can use a heat gun and heat the shaft, but go easy... those heat guns can damage a carbon shaft too..... food for thought...

btw... i use 3M commercial grade hot melt glue myself.
