Antelope hunt ideas for my daughter and me
« on: January 27, 2015, 10:28:00 AM »
The other day, My 12 year-old daughter springs on me "Dad, I want to go antelope hunting"! I was a little shocked but very excited by the idea.

I killed one about 15 years ago with Fred Eichler but would love to take one with the longbow. She would have to use her compound.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where to go? I emailed Fred about his semi-guided, but have not heard back yet. I believe he is booked.

We would share a blind and I would not hunt until she was done. I usually prefer DIY but in this case I would use an outfitter.
Thanks!
Seth

Look into Wyoming and Table mountain outfitters. They have some great country and lots of pronghorn.

Another option would be DIY if you think that would work for you. There is a lot of country to hunt in Wyoming.

Wyoming and Colorado both have good public land for this. Also, many land owners would let you pay a trespassing fee that would gain you access to grade A antelope ground. Many ranchers see them like praire dogs, a nuisance and an animal they don't mind you killing. Plus you're bowhunters so they won't see you as much of a threat when it comes to accidentally shooting livestock. Also, you have a kid which helps. Look around Carr, Colorado. Maybe the Pawnee grasslands. I do know of very good public land in the Custer national park in south east Montana. Near camp crook South Dakota. Easy to find info online for those areas.
Now then, get your weapons, your quiver and your bow and go out into the open country to hunt some wild game for me.- Genesis 27:3

Thanks guys!

Kamm1004, I actually killed my antelope in Carr.

My only resistance to DIY is being 2000+ miles away, I would not be able to scout or make contact with landowners. Flying would be a must.

I've done numerous DIY trips for mulies and elk. With those, I scout on Google Earth then pack in for 8-10 days. I just keep moving until I find what I'm looking for.
It seems that might be more difficult to do with goats?

Then my advice would be to look into tags for the Pawnee national grasslands in Colorado (east of Carr) or south Eastern Montana. If I lived 1000 miles away I wouldn't hesitate to go on a DIY hunt knowing what I know about those areas. Both are loaded with goats, can be scouted by Google earth and would be easy to hunt via spot and stalk or with blinds.

If I was you and had to choose, I'd go with Montana near the Custer national grasslands. I think that's the proper name, it's been 5 years for me. I would imagine a tag is a lot easier to draw up there. There are more springs and watering holes to hunt. More grouse and deer and other game to target as well if it interested you. That's just my two cents.

I hunted Forbes Outfitters in Wyoming. Had more chances than a single guy deserves.

Great guy and guide for sure
