Heavy arrow convert needs help with arrow selection
« on: January 28, 2015, 12:54:00 PM »
On a recent hog hunt I learned the value of shooting a heavy arrow for greater penetration. No argument, arrow placement is very important but I have come to understand a heavy arrow may be more forgiving on marginal shots by way of its ability to penetrate deeper into animal tissue and even shatter bone. So here's the question: I shoot a 50# BW PSA @28" I have a 28" draw. I want to shoot a 225 gr broad head with an additional 100 grs up front (325 grs total) Can anyone tell me, based on their current setup and experience whether I can stay with my CX 150"s or should I move up to the CX 250's. I'm willing to experiment with arrow length but would appreciate a place to start. Thanks

I shoot CX 150's with 250 grains up front, with cx inserts from my 50# bow.  I have a 28" draw and keep my arrows short.  I think you might be better off to try the 250's.  With 325 up front the 150's might end up too short.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Give the guys at RMSG a holler, I bet they could ball park you! I would imagine your going to have to up spine to a stiffer arrow or build out your strike plate which might be fun to experiment with your current arrows.

I use a 100 grain insert and 200 grain broadhead for 50@27 bow and use a 29" Beeman mfx 400.

A CE 250 is about a .400 spine.  I think you'll need that with 325 grains up front.

Try Big Jim for some GT heavy hunter blems. I have a shooting bud that has his up to over 600 grains for his 54# bow. He uses 145 grain heads.

You might get there with the 150's cut down to 29" or a tad shorter if your draw allows. I used to shoot 150's but could never quite get the flight correct with 100 grain inserts so I tried Easton axis and FMJ shafts and that worked out great. I also have a 28" draw and shoot 49-50 # bows. I ended up with a 29 1/2" shaft, 100 grain brass inserts, and shoot 175grn BH's total arrow weight is around 560 I believe and they really shoot great. And I believe the smaller diameter will also help a bit for penetration.

Mike,
This question gets right at the heart of a post I started this past weekend in response to Jason's (Lb-hntr) video on how he achieved UFOC by double inserting.  If you're just interested in total arrow weight then conventional wisdom says when you simply start adding point weight you're eventually going to weaken spine to where you have to shorten that arrow or go to a stiffer spine.  If you want to go heavier and increase FOC at the same time, then there is another path to get there and possibly use the current spine you have by making it stiffer with double inserts, but I don't want to drag your post "off in the bushes".  You can watch the video for yourself and decide what's best for you.

I like the 250s.I would start tuning with them full length and gradually cut them shorter till you have them tuned.

I use 250s alot for hunting.I draw abut 30" and bows are about 50#s at my draw.High performance strings and bows. They are mostly cut to center.Point weight of around 200-225 gr.Fifty grain brass inserts mostly.Sometimes 100 gr.

My arrows are 31 inches to 31.5".

Excellant hunting arrow no doubt.
