What angle for a Grizzly on a KME?
« on: January 30, 2015, 07:05:00 PM »
Guys,

What angle do you use on your KME knife sharpener when you sharpen a Grizzly Broadhead? Also, any tips you could give would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance!

Charlie,

Clamp the BHD, then color the bevel with a felt tip marker. Eye-ball the angle as best you can, then take a few swipes with a dry stone to see where the ink is being removed. Adjust the angle up or down a little at a time till the stone is removing the ink from the very cutting edge and about 1/2 the width of the bevel. If you have more questions let me know. Maybe we can turn this into a step by step "how to" thread. Thanks!

Ron

Thanks Ron!

I received my sharpener today, and I am trying to figure it all out.

I think they are talking about the knife sharpener. I do the marker thing with broadheads and my knives as well.

KY (that sounds ominous)    :scared:

KNIFE SHARPENER, brother, not BH sharpener... KNife is indeed adjustable angle...

I have both sharpeners but hoping I can use my broadhead sharpener on the 155's and not worry about setting angles....Ron?

How ya been John?

You can sharpen your 155s with the BHD sharpener with no problem. Just start with the coarsest stone you have and work the bevel side till you can feel a burr running the entire length of the blade. This could be one minute or a few minutes depending on how coarse your stone is. You don't need to grind a whole new bevel, just raise a burr.

Then go to a finer (medium grit) stone and continue working the bevel side a bit more. Not as much time as you spent with the first stone, just long enough to remove the scratches left by the coarse grit.

Now, before you leave the medium grit stone, flip the clamp and make 5-8 forward passes down the stone. No more than that. This will remove the burr from the unbeveled side.

Then flip the clamp again finish up just like it was a double bevel blade- 1 forward pass, rotate the clamp, 1 forward pass, rotate the clamp and so on. About 8-10 passes total, each pass lighter than the previous. The last two passes are so light that the blade is barely even touching the stone.

That's it. It should be plowing hair at this point. You can repeat on a finer stone if you like but when you're done with the stones, finish up by stropping on a piece of plain brown corrugated cardboard. Stropping is always done pulling the blade backward (the opposite of sharpening) because the slightest forward motion will instantly cut into your strop.

Charlie, you'll follow this same procedure, except that when using the knife sharpener the stone is moving instead of the blade.

Question? Thanks!

Thanks a bunch Ron....you taught me the cardboard trick at Baltimore a few years ago and use it all the time.

Love the statement..."plowing hair at this point"

They were a little harder to sharpen than I thought. I ended up going to the knife sharpener to get em really keen but I think that was more to do with Ron's leather strop and the CBN emulsion that I used.

Ron...I ended taking the rod guide all the way to the top so that the stone would be just hitting the edge of the head...is that normal/OK?

That is exactly how I do it with my KME knife sharpener. That way you only hone the cutting edge and it takes very little effort.

After a little trial and error on the 1st one the other's have taken maybe 10 minutes a piece from putting them in the sharpener and being done. These things are, like Ron said "plowing hair sharp"...hope to field test on a FL pig in a week or so. I'm impressed.
